List of some religious institutes (Catholic) → List of religious institutes – I created this page before realizing that for consistency's sake with Religious institute the "(Catholic)" modifier should be dropped. Unfortunately, for some reason, my attempt to delete this page failed (probably a humanware problem) and List of some religious institutes was speedily deleted despite my expressed opposition. This page should be therefore moved. Also I am not sure that the modifier "some" needs to be there. It was there on the original list on Religious institutes that I moved to this separate page and so I kept it. --Bruce Hall (talk) 05:01, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

• Oppose. "Religious institute" is a term belonging to Roman Catholic canon law. The tautological "(Catholic)" should be dropped. However, "some" (or the like) is needed: the list is very far from complete and makes no pretensions to be complete. For that reason its appearance as a separate article rather than as a section within another article can certainly be questioned. It should perhaps be put back into Religious institute.   • Comment I withdraw my support for dropping "(Catholic)" and now include that among my reasons for opposing the proposal. I do so primarily because of the more recent proposal, which I support, to move "Religious institute" to "Religious institute (Catholic)". There remains the question of keeping an indication that the list is "partial" or "of some". Noetica sees no need for such an indication. I think it is useful, if for no other reason than to discourage people from adding to it more and more from the many hundreds (1600? 1700?) of existing papal-jurisdiction ("pontifical right") institutes, not to speak of the probably more numerous diocesan institutes and the associations that are not yet religious institutes but are hoping to obtain recognition, to all of which the list declares itself to be open. • Oppose, but with quite a different perspective from the preceding opposer. Drop "some". No one claims that the list is complete, and no one need assume it. On the other hand, what the preceding opposer knows intimately is not a guide to how the title will be received by naive readers (the majority; those we serve). The qualifier "(Catholic)" is immediately helpful to almost all of us. There is no pernicious tautology here; only by the prevalent abuse of the doctrine of "primary topic" can its omission be justified. Serve the needs of real readers out there, not your own spartan sense of taxonomic neatness.
