Recent reverts
editHello Godfrey. Please note that brackets describing the native titles are not recommended for blue-linked articles, since description is given withing the liked article itself. And it is also required to use the english title since this is the .en wiki; unless or otherwise it is the most common title. I'd be happy to help if there is any further confusion. Also do note that it is highly recommended that you prepare an edit summary after every edit; in this case, a revert. Regards. Rehman(+) 09:58, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
Deciding on the common names of rivers
editAs people familiar with the subject would know, here in Sri Lanka, both languages are used for rivers on complete randomness. In other words, both the English names (i.e. Kelani River) and the Sinhala names (i.e. Kelani Ganga) are very commonly used, and is frequently switched by both English-speakers and Sinhala-speakers alike. So, to decide on fixed names for all rivers articles (both on Wikipedia and Commons), I have prepared the below table, to distinguish which is a more popular term (based on Google.lk). I am not sure what the difference between "Ganga" and "Oya" (in Sinhala) is, so I have added both anyway.
Hence based on the above, I will be starting to align article names, categories, Commons pages, and other related pages to reflect the above, per WP:COMMONNAME. Asterisk (*) denotes results that are mostly not related to the intended subject (river). Bold results denoted the most common name used for the respective river. --Rehman 03:30, 10 December 2015 (UTC)
Other rivers
editAs above, I will be randomly listing the names of other rivers/tributaries below, simply for future reference. Feel free to add as you review the respective article(s).
English name | Sinhala name (Ganga) | Sinhala name (Oya) | ∴ Final article title |
---|---|---|---|
Kotmale River (1,620) | Kotmale Ganga (108) | Kotmale Oya (6,400) | Kotmale Oya |
Kukule River (1,050) | Kukule Ganga (3,940) | Kukule Oya (5) | Kukule Ganga |
