Who says that IKEA is a shopping centre sure its a Speciality shop but not a Mall, otherwise things can get out of hand like naming Bunnings Warehouses, Harvey Norman as Shopping malls!! Turn it up! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.211.125.138 (talk • contribs)

It was probably just someone who put the Ikea down as the mall. Springvale Homemaker Centre gets called Springvale Ikea. Ææqwerty (talk) 06:12, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Notability criteria

The article states that it is "list of notable shopping centres in Australia", yet notability in this case isn't something that there is a clear guideline on (apart from "Malls and shops are not generally notable" in WP:AFDP). It seems that pretty much every moderately sized shopping centre in Australia is listed. Periodically, articles on individual shopping centres on this list are nominated for deletion, some (eg Werribee Plaza) are deleted, others (eg Macarthur Square) survive. I don't see the benefit to listing (and having stub articles on) each and every Westfields and similarly sized shopping centre in Australia, as few of them are individually notable - most have similar architecture and contain the same franchise stores. The only difference between them is that they're in a different suburb. So I propose that we use a criteria similar to the one discussed on Talk:List of shopping malls by country (which has been used as a basis for List of shopping malls in the United States, which I regard as a good example of what we should be aiming for with the Australian list). Anyway, the proposal:

To have its own article, an Australian shopping centre should meet at least one of the following

• Historical notability (i.e. first shopping centre in a city or revolutionary in some aspect).
• Minimum number of stores (I'd suggest 200).
• Largest shopping centre in a city or region.
• Notability linked to another attraction.

Smaller shopping centres should be merged into the article for their suburb.

Mako: what do you suggest is a verifiable source for number of stores, which one is the largest? Many of these facts, are time-sensitive. Nobody wants the article to become wrong, so if someone says "Mount Druitt Westfields is the biggest shopping centre in Mount Druitt, with 128 stores" - so what? Will that still be true in six months? I DOUBT IT.

Any of these time-based facts need to specify WHEN they were / are true.

I agree wholeheartedly re: Notability linked to another attraction.

This article is an absolute mess. Some are indeed notable shopping centres but the majority are a hardware store or IGA with a few specialty shops. Orderinchaos78 ^(t|c) 15:46, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

I didn't even know that article existed ... I've summarily changed it into a redirect as it is superfluous (and named incorrectly, as Australia does not have "shopping malls").--Mako 01:21, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

May want to add Geelong subsection in Victoria

I'm not editing on here much but I guess I want to raise for discussion: Geelong is getting to be its own substantial metro area with its own outlying towns and whatnot. It'd make sense to have its own page like Wollongong. Waurn Ponds shopping centre is already on there, I can think of Westfield Geelong, Market Square and Corio Village as well.
