Major changes to article

edit

Have manually reverted changes to the articles original layout please discuss major changes first.--Navops47 (talk) 07:59, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

The page is better if you can (1) sort the tables (2) sort all the tables together as one (3) do not have states listed more than once and (4) accually stick to the date range given for the page.
You should not revert edit simply because you consider them "major changes". This is being WP:BOLD. If you have a real concern please indicate what it is so that we can discuss it. Thanks. tahc chat 15:02, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Sorry I disagree I work on other wiki project teams with other team members you don't WP:BOLD unless there are serious problems with the article and YOU should propose what you have mind not the other way round. The tables provide a concise geographic and sequential layout which make's them EASIER for the reader to locate information quickly instead of them being all lumped together and having to scroll up and down. States listed more than once are there if their territory overlaps into another GEOGRAPHIC area which is logical e.g. Empire's. As for date range's formation of the state does not neatly fit into time slots some OVERLAP long periods so should be included. I will flag this discussion up to WikiProject Former countries shortly.--Navops47 (talk) 03:04, 26 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
All you have said is that you disagree-- you cannot make pages the way you like just because you like it that way.
Tables do "provide a concise... layout" but that is no reason to avoid making them sortable. Since readers look for different things at different times a sortable table (or tables) will certainly be better. There is not one "sequential layout" that will always be best.
You said which states are listed more than once, but that does not by itself make it the best way to do things. Indeed, the vast majority of lists of states on Wikipedia list each state just once. There are a few reasons for this. Maybe I see Umayyad Caliphate listed under "Asia"-- how do I know if the Umayyad Caliphate was also in other areas of the world at that time? I would have to search this each section on the page top to bottom.
Your sections can also be arbitrary. If I am looking for a state on the Iberian Peninsula how would I know if it is under "Europe, North and West" or "Europe, South and East"? tahc chat 05:11, 26 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Quote "All you have said is that you disagree-- you cannot make pages the way you like just because you like it that way" and the same also goes for you. If the layout as it stands was a problem they would have been flagged up and changed a long time ago not 3 years later and as they receive an average 2000 to 4000 page views per month they are clearly working fine, however we need to reach a comprise the tables you have changed here List_of_political_entities_in_the_1st_century IMO the location reads better on the left not the right to answer your own arguments "If I am looking for a state on the Iberian Peninsula how would I know if it is under "Europe, North and West" or "Europe, South and East"? and having had a closer look understand where your coming from and can now see the benefit of the sortable list but can you put the geographic location on the left side and the state name on the far right? If so we have a deal go ahead and make the changes --Navops47 (talk) 06:37, 26 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Question the sortable list you have done for existed can they be sorted from oldest to earliest?--Navops47 (talk) 06:51, 26 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
The table columns can be moved around but I think it would be quite confussing to have the state name on the far right. How about (as a comromise) we have geographic location in the 1st columns (far left) and state name in the 2nd. The page is mainly about the states, and the name of the main item is never put on the far right column of a table. If you do not like this comromise still, then I think we will benifit from having a WP:THIRD and/or input from others at WP:WikiProject Former countries.
Sortable tables can be sorted A-Z or Z-A. Just clink on the top of the columns a 2nd time. tahc chat 14:07, 26 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
1st Geographic and 2nd State am happy with that.--Navops47 (talk) 16:45, 26 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
