1958 to 1970

edit

As with the List of Stewards of the Chiltern Hundreds I can't absolutely vouch for the dates between 1958 and 1970. The date of Geoffrey de Freitas' appointment is especially uncertain, and the dates for Edward Wakefield, Aubrey Jones and Sir Oliver Crosthwaite-Eyre may be a few days out. Dbiv 21:44, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Charles Waterhouse definitely resigned on 29th October 1957. Polling day in the byelection caused by his resignation was 28th November. Frank Cousins definitely resigned in December 1966, as the byelection was on 9th March 1967. Source for 1944-1958 is PRO T 221/468. Dbiv 12:36, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Yes...those are the corrections I made. So why did you revert to 29th November 1957 and December 1967? Gzornenplatz 16:08, Oct 3, 2004 (UTC)

Full names

edit

It makes more sense to have people listed under the names they were known by, rather than their full names.

Everyone else is linked under their full names; it's inconsistent to reduce anyone with a link to their common name only. If people click on the link, they'll work out who it is. Dbiv 23:24, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)
But the tradition in lists of incumbents/appointees on Wikipedia is to use the names people are known by. The only exceptions are people with peerages, in which case the peerages are listed in addition to the common name but again, usually, the full names are not given. It serves no purpose to include people's full names - it's counter-intuitive and annoying. What's more, almost all of these links actually are to the common names, you are just labelling the link with their full names, making for exceptionally ugly wikitext. And I don't think it's much use as a list if people have to go through any kind of process to work out who someone is. There's just no reason for it.

Malcolm St Clair

edit

There looks to be a pretty well documented page at http://www.alba.org.uk/timeline/1945to1967.html which gives St Clair's date of accession to the office as 2nd August 1963, as opposed to 1st August as given in the article.

It's Aliiive!

edit

I've spent the last two weeks working on a sandboxed version of the article. As such the list is now complete, every MP has his or her own page rather than a collection of redlinks and i've added a fancy-dan intro para :). Hope y'all enjoy. Ironholds 19:48, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Update needed

edit

This list is largely based on Appointments to the Chiltern Hundreds and Manor of Northstead Stewardships since 1850, published by the House of Commons Department of Information Services.

A revised version of that list was published in January 2010, which contains a significant number of new entries, and apparently some revision. For example, I have just added Henry Butler-Johnstone, who is in the current Commons list as having resigned on 27 January 1862, but he was not in this list.

The entry after him is William Johnson Fox, listed here as having resigned on 27 January 1862, but in the Department of Information Services list as resigning 20 April 1862.

I suggested that this list be fully checked against the new version of the Department of Information Services list. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:13, 15 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've checked names, dates, parties, etc. through about 1870 and then just names, as things appear to be largely in order. The Dept. of Info. Svcs. list accidentally changed Sir Robert Price's year from 1875 to 1975. Other than your example above, the only problems I found with our list were:
  • Missing Charles Compton Cavendish, who resigned in December 1857 before being created Baron Chesham.
  • 2 dates corrected in 1862.
I think we're OK, unless someone really wants to do a date-by-date verification; I spot-checked dates through to the early 1910s and didn't see any further problems. Choess (talk) 00:54, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Gerry Adams

edit

There have been many press reports that Gerry Adams has resigned but it is clear that he has not yet been appointed. Note that the press reports do not state in terms that he has been appointed Steward of the Manor of Northstead, merely that he has resigned. Given that the reports first appeared in Irish news sources, the most likely explanation is that Sinn Féin issued a press release confirming that Adams has sent a signed letter requesting appointment to the Manor of Northstead. When an appointment is made, the Treasury will issue a press release here. Until then, no entry should appear in the list. Sam Blacketer (talk) 21:09, 21 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Further to that is the interesting comment in Mark Devenport's blog that Adams has written to the Speaker to resign. If he has done so, no action will be taken on it. He needs to write to the Chancellor of the Exchequer asking to be appointed to the Manor of Northstead. Sam Blacketer (talk) 10:58, 22 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please, read the article carefully. It says that Adams did not accept the appointment. It does not say that he wasn't appointed. He has been appointed, that is an undeniable fact, but he has chosen to "not accept" it. It makes no difference; he does not have to accept it. He has the ability by law to refuse to accept it, but he has not exercised this power. Please do not revert again without discussing. ninety:one 20:00, 26 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Firstly he wrote to the office of the Speaker. If one is to seek an office for profit of the crown he/she must write to the Chancellor. In addition under section 8 of the House of Commons Disqualification Act 1975 the individual must accept the position which he quite clearly hasn't. Downing street has been forced to apologize for Cameron's comments http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-12292896 Exiledone (talk) 20:16, 26 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
The member does not have to write to the Chancellor in order to be appointed to the office, and as a Treasury spokesman clarified, they acted on his letter to the Speaker. There may be something in the argument that if he fails to accept the office he will remain in the seat, but it is a fact that he has been appointed, and I'm glad to see that the entry has now stayed. ninety:one 21:07, 26 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
This merits further discussion. Thats why I choose not to start an edit war which I could've easily done. Firstly he has to accept the office which I doubt he will. Ergo he shouldn't be mentioned. Cameron was forced to apologize to him. Regarding the Chancellor, the Chancellor is usually the first person informed not the sepaker.

Exiledone (talk) 21:44, 26 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

There is no evidence that Cameron apologised, nor that his secretary was "forced" to apologise either. Adams said the secretary apologised, but neither the prime minister nor his secretary have issued a public apology. — O'Dea 22:35, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
Sorry its an official apology it still stands.

Exiledone (talk) 23:09, 26 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps a note of explanation could be placed beside Gerry Adams's name on the list, pointing out that he did not apply for or accept any such position. Would this be an acceptable compromise? I seems a bit ludicrous to have his name there without any other information. 89.126.56.62 (talk) 17:17, 28 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Alistair Goodlad

edit

Does anyone know why Goodlad is on this list? The London Gazette records him as being Steward of the Chiltern Hundreds (and he's on the wikipedia list for the Chiltern Hundreds). Is it true that he held both offices at the same time? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Frinton100 (talkcontribs) 12:40, 22 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Chris Pincher

edit

Chris Pincher is no longer an MP, and should now be the incumbent Steward and Bailiff. The writ has been moved to hold a by-election in his former constituency of Tamworth. 194.80.232.22 (talk) 14:00, 11 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

I've been waiting for the primary source on this (gazette notice of appointment to manor of northstead) rather than an article, but will use votes and proceedings of the writ motion when this is published this evening if that appears first. 1234567jack (talk) 14:26, 11 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
