Should include assault rifles ?

edit

I question the value of including firearms that are not submachine guns in a list of submachine guns. If the wikipedia doesn't already have a list of assault rifles it should have one. This link could contain a single link to that list. -- Geo Swan 18:33, 2005 Mar 19 (UTC)

There is already a list of assault rifles on wikipedia. Also, I've removed the "MP 5, 9 mm, German ww2 submachine gun" as as far as I know, and through searching of many other sources, there was no MP 5 subamchine gun in WWII. Also, I've removed any referencs to the M7 caseless submachine gun from Halo, as this list is only concerned with real weapons, not videogame weaponry. --Vectorman2 14:19, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • After careful searching, I can find no evidence of AP-9 being a submachine gun; rather, the few sources I do find suggest it is a semi-automatic pistol with a large-capacity magazine. Also, I cannot find any reference to an SM-90 SMG anywhere except here, or pages directly quoting Wikipedia. Suggest removal of both weapons from this list. I don't think removing Assault Rifles which also known as an SMG would help...
Some weapons can't be sorted into SMG/Assault Rifle...

The articles themselves, when you find them, already cover their variants. This was true of the sterling. -- Geo Swan 18:33, 2005 Mar 19 (UTC)

Spitfire?

edit

Why is there a WWII fighter aircraft in a list of sub-machine guns? I'm removing it. MA79OZ (talk) 05:13, 27 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sorting

edit

The sort order won't change when i click on the things to make it do so. User: XM8 Carbine. can't bother logging in —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.223.133.156 (talk) 13:13, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Country of origin

edit

Poland was occupied and controlled by Germany, but by no means were weapons produced by the Polish resistance/underground/Home Army German-made weapons and to put a German flag against such a weapon would be to mislead the reader as to the gun's origin. Only submachine guns?

edit

This list includes assault rifles, for whatever reason.

I believe the assault rifles (Daewoo K1, L22, and Honey Badger) should be removed, being chambered for assault rifle cartridges, they are not SMGs.

The M93R is probably also better placed on a machine pistol list, but at least I can understand the vague overlap between SMG and machine pistol there.

Thom430 (talk) 20:38, 10 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Agreed - I have removed them. If we're going to include short assault rifles here, we ought to include everything the media incorrectly labels as "assault rifles" at List of assault rifles. That someone misused a term does not mean we need to follow their mistake (or in the case of Colt, their branding). Parsecboy (talk) 13:59, 30 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and as for PDWs like the Honey Badger, the M1 Carbine has been frequently called the first PDW - shall we include that too? Parsecboy (talk) 14:18, 30 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Additions and changes

edit

I have no objection if someone wants to add the Villar-Perosa aircraft machine gun and Standschütze Hellriegel M1915 in a new "Proto-submachinegun" section. I would also be OK with adding the Pedersen device in the new section. Yes, I know they were only a semi-auto conversions. However, they can be rightly called a proto-submachineguns for time and would have most likely had been very quickly converted to full-auto if they were actually used during WWI. I also don't have problem with adding the M2 carbine in the new "PDW" section. As many consider it the father to the PDW concept.

AND, I don't have a problem with dividing these section by decade, era (WW1, WW2, Post war, etc.), or even generation....

  • 1st gen SMGs look like rifles with standard wooden rifle stocks like the MP-18, Beretta Model 38, PPSh-41 etc. (Thompson SMGs are also called 1st gen SMGs)
  • 2nd gen SMGs have pistol grips and folding stocks MP-40 and Grease Gun (STEN guns are also called 2nd SMGs)
  • 3rd gen SMGs have telescoping bolts and mag-wells in the pistol grip like the UZI and MAC 10 (Beretta Model 12s are also called 3rd gen SMGs)
  • 4th gen SMGs are based on assault rifles designs like the MP5 and Colt 9mm SMG.
  • 5th gen SMGs are the PDWs like the P90

In addition, some "Compact Assault Rifles", such as the Colt XM177, HK53 and AKS-74U, have been historically referred to as submachines. So, I'm also good with a new "Compact Assault Rifles" section. And, of course I'm good with the new "Machine pistols" section--RAF910 (talk) 02:18, 25 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for reductions, please add Rate of Fire column back again...
Because ROF has an important role in SMGs... Tnx

Hayyanhami (talk) 21:00, 25 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

H&K USC uses .45acp bullets, so it must be sorted in submachines. "ACP" may refer to "Automatic Colt Pistol", as u said 'some weapons can't be sorted only in one group...

2 lists in list of smgs

edit

I moved the following discussion here from my talk page......--RAF910 (talk) 21:37, 25 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, we have 2 lists in list of smgs page for no reason.

You can go ahead and combined them--RAF910 (talk) 21:37, 25 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Alphabetically

edit

All entries should be listed alphabetically per WIKI style.--RAF910 (talk) 07:00, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Some SMGs are much more popular than the others, if you click on date you will see only a few of them. for example, PPSH41 and Thompson SMG are much more popular than other SMGs. We must find a better way than sorting them alphabetically. Thanks for your last edit RAF910, specially for AUG para.Hayyanhami (talk) 11:36, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

A list based on popularity is unworkable, because popularity is constantly changing. All entries should be listed alphabetically per WIKI style.--RAF910 (talk) 17:26, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

You are right, Maybe it won't be accurated but it's better than hiding them between other SMGs. Adding 2 lists may fix this problem, but it would mess all the things up... So the only way is sorting alphabetically... You can go ahead and sort them again... Hayyanhami (talk) 17:36, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

What makes an SMG "non-notable"?

edit

And why does it matter? It is a list afterall... Blitzkriegfree (talk) 15:03, 22 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Not having an independent article. The pages WP:CSC and WP:INDISCRIMINATE explain why it matters. Loafiewa (talk) 15:20, 22 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ok, sooooooo the PM-63 Rak or wz. 39 Mors did not have an independent article? I can see it with the Fort-224 (I will remove it then), but why those other two? Blitzkriegfree (talk) 15:22, 22 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
