List format

I'd like to see the current sectioning based on nationality replaced by a sortable table with separate columns for nationality, year, role, etc. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 17:39, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Something like this:

Type	Country	Date	Status	Role	Description
Bell X-1	USA	1946	Prototype	Experimental	First supersonic aircraft. Rocket powered.
Dassault Mirage III	France	1956	Production	Fighter	Tailless delta wing. Made in large numbers with many sub-variants.

Classes

The standard list format at WP:AVILIST now includes a Class column. The default classes given are not really appropriate and the guideline allows the classes for this list to be agreed here. Some possible classes could be:

• Rocket (includes hybrid jet/rocket)
• Straight wing
• Swept wing
• Delta wing
• Hypersonic
• Military
• Civil
• Air-launched
• VTOL

But clearly, these are based on different ideas and several may apply to a given design, which would break the ability to sort the list on them. It would be OK to mix two criteria only as long as there are no such overlaps. What would be the best approach to classifying supersonic aircraft, to make best use of the Class column? Would that be any more informative than the standard set of classes? Also, it is pretty much taken care of by the Role column. I'm struggling to think of a useful extra criterion that a reader might want to sort the list on. At the moment there are a scatter of entries by method of propulsion and takeoff. I now think that the powerplant system best classifies these designs. All V/STOL types to date have had additional lift engines, leading to the possibility of different engine types for vertical and horizontal flight. Simply classifying them all as V/STOL resolves that problem. Some types, such as the Lockheed Blackbird, had hybrid turbo/ramjet engines. That leaves my current thoughts at:

• Rocket
• Ramjet
• Turbojet
• Turbofan
• V/STOL
• Hybrid

Speed Column

I suggest adding a new column for the max speed of the aircraft, so it can be easily be seen and sorted by.
