Talk:List of tallest buildings in Africa

Johannesburg

edit

Text about buildings in Johannesburg is nice, but definitely does not belong to this list. Please move it to Johannesburg article or create a separate article for it. --Jklamo (talk) 02:08, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

ABC Building

edit

I think, and according to a few articles around, including the Wikipedia entry for List of tallest buildings in Zimbabwe that the ABC Building in Zhishivane doesn't exist, it's status is 'unbuilt' or 'fantasy' here: http://www.emporis.com/building/abcbuilding-zvishavane-zimbabwe http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=35529

I think this list could be updated? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zimchaa (talkcontribs)

That is interesting. I swear that the buliding was listed in past as completed on emporis (and still it is for example at structurae.net). Maybe kind of hoax (but what about this ?). --Jklamo (talk) 16:16, 16 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Non-buildings

edit

Please check CTBUH Height Criteria. "A tall “building” can be classed as such (as opposed to a telecommunications/observation tower) and is eligible for the "Tallest” lists if at least 50 percent of its height is occupied by usable floor area." That is the reason why we do not list telecommunications towers, minarets etc. here. --Jklamo (talk) 08:59, 24 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Mosque of Algiers

edit

A building with less than 50% usable space is not a building. It is a structure. Minarets, towers and masts are example of structures. There are exceptions and the great mosque of Algiers is one as the minaret will be a full on proper building, so please stop removing it from this list. Thank you[1] Dovikap : Talk 00:25, 17 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

While this 2015 CTBUH article states that the new mosque would become the tallest building in Africa, currently it is listed as a minaret under construction (at 264 metre high) and is not included on their list of the tallest buildings in Africa. Although the entire mosque complex is over 50% usable space, there is no indication that the minaret is an occupied tower. As the CTBUH does not include minarets in its criteria for tallest buildings, this article should not list it as such either. Loopy30 (talk) 14:38, 5 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
The CTBUH now classifies it as a building and it is listed as the tallest building in Africa [2][3]. I have added it back to the list. The 'minaret' actually functions as a high-rise building and includes a museum and a research center [4].--149.167.150.232 (talk) 14:41, 29 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Cut-off

edit

At the moment the list is way too long (161 rows), hard to be maintained. I suggest cut-off to at least 120 m (80 rows).Jklamo (talk) 22:02, 3 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Cut off to 120 m. All 100-119 m buildings were added to WikiData.--Jklamo (talk) 15:02, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
