This is not an unreferenced laundry list with no clear purpose. Its purpose is to gather in one place all the terrestrial fibre optic cable projects in Africa. This will have the direct benefit to the AfTerFibre project which is attempting to build a [public] map of these cables and is naturally of general benefit to anyone interested in increasing access to information and communications technologies in Africa. This information exists nowhere else. If you live in Africa, this list is intended to be a useful resource in finding out how to gain access to fibre optic infrastructure. One Laptop Per Child

This information is essential to the planning of economic development and one-to-one education projects in countries such as Rwanda, Ghana, Kenya, and others where providing Internet access (and electricity) are fundamental concerns. It has been uncertain until quite recently when the first fiber optic cable would reach each country, would be lit up, would be connected to major cities, and would be connected from there to the countryside. At present we have cables to every coastal country in Africa, and reports of plans and funding to reach the interiors of all of those countries, and every landlocked country.
