Please note that material from Discogs.com is entirely user-generated and cannot be used to reliably source an entry to this list. It can be a good source, however, for leads on which to to follow up. For example the list linked above under "Refideas" might reveal the existence of a new vinyl Pac-Man soundtrack, but in order to add it to this Wikipedia list we would need to find a reliable source that covers this version of the soundtrack. -Thibbs (talk) 15:30, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

To (partially) address your concern: recently the curator of the Discogs list has opened a website where he reports on new VGM vinyl releases with reliable sources. It still might be tricky to find good sources for already-released albums, but it seems like a valuable page to look at for future releases. I've gone ahead and added it to the reflist template. • There have gotten to be too many additions of non-RS links used as citations. I think the Refideas box above is confusing people. At present neither Discogs nor BlipBlop are considered to be "reliable". I like and visit both of them, but unless they are given a pass at WT:VG/RS then they would not be considered suitable as citations for an encyclopedia. I've just tagged a large number of entries that were only cited to BlipBlop. We need to find additional citations from reliable sources to bolster (as in the case of the "Out Run Original Soundtrack" entry) or replace those entries or else they should be removed. A non-exclusive list of reliable sources can be found here. In the meantime I'm removing the non-RS refideas and placing them below:

I've gone through BlipBlop's media collection and I added 9 of their sources to Refideas above. There are some other sources like OriginalSoundVersion.com that also look decent to me. I will list these below. Before moving the other sources listed at blipblop to the refideas, we need to discuss or verify them against the sources listed at WP:VG/RS.

Vinyl data

I'd like to suggest that the vinyl data section be split off into its own article/list, as the use of vinyl as a data storage medium is not equivalent to video game soundtracks, other than them both using vinyl. Any objections to moving it to something like Vinyl data? Trivialist (talk) 18:49, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

So the threshold question for me would be notability: whether there are sufficient sources to support a stand-alone article on the topic of vinyl data. What we have so far only covers the barest evidence that the individual releases exist. There is almost no discussion of vinyl data as a whole at least in the current version of the article. Are there any good sources that could cover the topic of vinyl data as a general topic? I think there are a few examples like The Thompson Twins Adventure and Chris Sievey's Camouflage, but the sources for both of those articles center entirely on the individual releases rather than on the topic as a whole (i.e. sufficient to demonstrate notability). -Thibbs (talk) 19:24, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

Also, a recorded soundtrack is definitely different from an encoded soundtrack, but I think the argument could be made that they are both kinds of soundtracks released on vinyl (one as off-game media and one as in-game code). -Thibbs (talk) 20:19, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi Trivialist. You bring an interesting point. In theory I would agree with you suggestion ti split off the vinyl data section. However, at this time it is too brief and is only supported by four sources. To Thibbs point, I'd say that my guess is that there are enough sources out there to both establish notability as well as develop a more full fledged article. So to me the key question is whether someone is willing to put the work to find those additional sources and distill from them the knowledge on the subject matter. If the section is split off, I would suggest that a "See also" section be created in this article, pointing to the split off one. Thank you.Al83tito (talk) 06:34, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Possibly, but WP:SAL would be the key policy to pay close attention to here. Since list articles are articles, notability (of the topic rather than the list entries) is the threshold question. Are there in fact any articles about the topic of "vinyl data" in general or are the sources specific to individual programs (which would only go toward establishing notability of the program itself)? -Thibbs (talk) 10:56, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Coming afresh, 4+ years later, there is a whole paragraph about the (sub)topic, which is not covered elsewhere and is more than just a list-intro, and includes five refs about this topic as a whole rather than simply supporting specific list-entries and is also not strictly about soundtracks alone. Therefore, I think it meets WP:GNG for its own article. I have thus WP:SPLIT off the List of video game soundtracks released on vinyl#Vinyl data section into en:Vinyl data.
