Mount Sugarloaf
editMount Sugarloaf in New South Wales is listed as volcanic. Is this correct or is it a mistake for Mount Sugarloaf in Victoria ? Gubernatoria (talk) 15:23, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

editWhy is the eruption date for "Newer Volcanics Province" listed explicitly as 2900BC when the others are "years ago"?
If it was a specific volcano in the group that erupted on that date (and it's somehow been recorded), then it should probably be stated which volcano it was.
However when reading the wiki page for that specific group, it says "The youngest eruptions in the volcanic field took place at Mount Schank and Mount Gambier about 5600 years ago, when explosive activity formed several maars and associated lava flows." 5600 years ago is definitely NOT 2900BC (closer to 3600BC).
This needs checking. 131.217.6.9 (talk) 05:41, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
- Ok, done some further research. The Mount Gambia volcano page Mount_Gambier_(volcano) says:
- "Ash from the Mt Gambier area has been dated at about 4,700 years old and about 1,400 years old, indicating that the vents were certainly active at these times, though possibly for a considerable period before and after."
- Now the 4700 date puts it at about 2600BC, but the 1400 one doesn't.
- Any Ideas?

editI do not have the time make many changes to this article but if someone has or borrows a copy of "Intraplate Volcanism in Eastern Australia and New Zealand" by Johnson (eds.) and contributed to by 59 different geologists, they can make this article so much better. Age dates have been published in various scientific journals and are summarised in this book. However, since we know so little about most Australian volcanoes we are learning more things all the time. For instance the Central Volcanic Province in NSW (incorrectly referred to in the article as Central Volcano) has recently been resolved into three different geological units with a major volcanic centre identified at Maybole (near Glen Innes)... this is really a new volcano in the correct sense of the word. Tasmania
editThe first title has been "Australian mainland and Tasmania" for a long time, but no mention of Tasmania (or NT or ACT) has ever been included. I have changed the title to reflect the current lists, but we're missing volcano sites in these places, or a note that there are none. Mark Hurd (talk) 09:51, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
We are missing the Tasmanian volcanic sites. I will see if I get time to add some. Yendor of yinn (talk) 23:01, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

editAre there any active volcanoes in Australia?
No there are not any ACTIVE volcanoes in australia but there are extinct volcanoes.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Why?
I think that this is a good thing because we will therefore have less damage to our continent compared to other parts of the world were volcanoes are common.
