More mills

edit

I know these two windmills existed, but I don't have references for them at the moment. As far as I recall both were mentioned in Bygone Kent at some point. A photograph of the Lamberhurst mill is known to exist. If anyone can supply a reference please add these to the article. Mjroots (talk) 15:37, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Location Name of mill Type Maps First mention

Tonbridge Quarry Hill

Smock mill
Note - ref found for Lamberhurst, added to list. Ref still needed for Tonbridge. Mjroots (talk) 07:46, 24 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Scope for expansion

edit

Coles Finch used the 1596 map as his start point. References to windmills earlier than this are very sparse in the list. Verifiable additions are welcome. Mjroots (talk) 09:48, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Chinnor mill

edit

A mill was moved from Chatham, Kent to Chinnor, Oxfordshire according to Rex Wailes (The English Windmill p169). There are two Chatham mills which the type is not known. Chinnor was a post mill, but which of the two was it? Mjroots (talk) 16:57, 24 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ordnance Survey maps

edit

I've removed all Ordnance Survey map references from the list. This is because when Coles Finch listed a mill as on the 1819-43 Ordnance Survey map, he meant it was on an Ordnance Survey map published sometime between 1819 and 1843. I thought he meant it was on a map published in 1819, and revised in 1843. Discussion about this has taken place at the Mills archive. If a mill is marked on an Ordnance Survey map for which the publishing date is known, then that date can be added to the maps column. Mjroots (talk) 19:45, 23 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've been through Coles Finch and updated first/last known dates where possible. If a mill is stated to have been marked on the 1819-43 map, the first date is used if that is the latest reference, the last date is used if that is the earliest reference. Photographs

edit

Many of the 'photographs' are actually paintings. Perhaps the column heading should be changed to 'pictures' or something similar. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.113.2.82 (talk) 07:38, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I agree. It should be "Images", unless there are any videos, in which case "Media". -- Quiddity (talk) 18:41, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
