25000 schools in the UK

edit

There are over 25000 schools in the UK! Maybe this should be called 'list of famous schools in the united kingdom'. It certainly needs a lot more additions.

It does indeed need some thought, but I was planning to put off putting too much thought into it until later! When the page gets unwieldy, it can be split up, with different pages for different categories of schools, and so on. I don't think that "List of famous schools in the United Kingdom" would work, though, since we can't decide which ones are famous in a NPOV way! We need to get some proper NPOV lists, such as "list of schools in such-and-such a group", and things like that. But since the page is still small, we don't need to worry about it for quite some time. :) -- Oliver P. 01:32 Feb 26, 2003 (UTC)

I like lists on Wikipedia, but aren't we going a bit list crazy with this one? do we list just public (ie private) schools? Comprehensives? All Grammar schools? I can see the need for many lists, but I can't see how a list of schools is useful? (Will someone start a list of schools in Vermont? what about Italy? Where will it all end? JTD 02:23 Feb 26, 2003 (UTC)

Why would you ever want it to end? Susan Mason

I don't fancy a page of [Schools in Wiltshire run by left-handed headmasters] and [religious schools in Northern Alaska run by nuns who wear blue habits]. Or [schools in towns that have names of more than three syllables]. JTD 02:35 Feb 26, 2003 (UTC)

Alaskan nuns who wear blue habits are servants of Satan! I need a list of their schools so I can track them down!!!!! (and, of course, we all know about the evil tendencies of lefties and people from towns with more than three syllables -- the evillest person I ever met was a blue-habited left-handed nun from Kuala Lumpur). Well, as I said, it needs some thought. But as far as I can tell, the ones on the list (ignoring the red-linked ones) are almost the only British schools that have entries in the Wikipedia. (If you find any others with entries, please add them to the list!) So the list is currently quite convenient as a way to find what schools have articles here. But yes, it will need some more thought later... -- Oliver P. 02:46 Feb 26, 2003 (UTC)

I am deeply opposed to a list which contains only private ("public") schools in the UK and am not happy to see the list of Camden schools removed. There must at least be a hyperlink to the Camden page. BevRowe 12:44 Feb 26, 2003 (UTC)

Don't worry, it's not only for public schools! The Matthew Arnold Schools are not public schools, as far as I can tell, and King Edward VI Grammar School certainly isn't. (I will get round to writing an article on it one day...) It's just that almost all the schools that have articles in the Wikipedia are public schools, because they are usually more famous. And I'm sorry for removing your link to London Borough of Camden - I didn't notice that the page for the borough had a list of schools on it. I've copied the links to this page. I've put them into my crazy listed-alphabetically-by-county scheme, although I expect this will have to be changed later... -- Oliver P. 13:07 Feb 26, 2003 (UTC)

Okay, is this the point at which I admit that the page is out of control...? -- Oliver P. 02:32 Feb 27, 2003 (UTC)

Yes, I agree. I was happy to leave the links within the Camden page, providing there is a link from the Schools page that picks them up. Although I am an ardent supporter of state education, I also recognise that the major public schools are of intrinsic historic interest and more likely than a local comprehensive to be looked up in an encyclopedia. So we need a structure that is sensitive to this. But by including the local schools as well, even if by indirection, we give a real fillip to their pupils browsing Wikipedia. BevRowe 11:05 Feb 27, 2003 (UTC)

What's the point of this? Is this supposed to list every school in the UK? If it is meant to be more specific than that then the intro needs to say so. Angela 17:28, Oct 18, 2003 (UTC)

There is no point. It's just one those silly list pages to which Wikipedia is prone. There would be no great loss if it were deleted entirely. -- Derek Ross

Yes -- in fact, it'd be more informative to do something along these lines: at public school (UK), make a list of famous public schools, same for boarding schools, private schools, etc. Or, better yet, use those AWESOME CATEGORIES!!!1111!1!11 :) ugen64 01:47, Jun 18, 2004 (UTC)

Major tidyup started - can always do with a spare pair of hands

What makes a school a school?

edit

I'm just wondering what can be included on this list. Is it just for education establishments for people from the ages 5 to 18? Otr can we include separate sixth form colleges, adult education colleges, other types of college, universities, nursery school etc? As many of these types of establishments would cater for people of similar ages as schools on the list.

For example, if we weren't going to include separate nursery school we'd still have some on the list when the are part of other primary school. The same can be said for Sixth form colleges. If we didn't include them, the list would only be partially completed for education establishments for 16+ (only those Sixth forms which are part of secondary schools being included).

So, I just think it might be a good idea to set boundaries on what types of institutions are classed as school in this case. Evil Eye 20:52, 26 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Is this o.k?

edit

I live in Barking and Dagenham, and i dont think that you had it down on the list of school sections. I went to add the schools i know, but there are over 50 and i saw that the other boroughs didnt have that many. I didnt want to go ahead and put these on, as you may delete it because of the excessive length. Is it o.k if i add these schools? Becasue there are quite alot... There are also alot of schools who are either just infants, juniors or overall primary schools, as well as a number of specialist schools. How should i list these? - Bourbons3 21:34, 27 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

  • Just the secondary and specialist schools, no primary?

Boston College

edit

The link to "Boston College" in this list goes to the American college of the same name, which is clearly incorrect. I haven't removed the link because that's obviously not the solution. Something needs to be done at Boston College. Its website is here. SMeeds 09:03, 4 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

North East England

edit

Where are all the counties from North East England in the list? OK, there is North Yorkshire and Cumbria (usually lumped in with the NE) but what about T+W, Northumberland, Durham or Teeside? Considering that two of the best comprehensive schools are located in Gateshead, I find this rather strange. Perhaps this is all a ploy by our southern masters to indicate we don't have schools "oop north". I'd do the list myself but I can't be bothered, not for such a pointless article. I'll do a few for Gateshead. hedpeguyuk 15:29, 24 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Split by country?

edit

Please start voting now. A similar split of List of hospitals in the United Kingdom was very helpful. Thanks. Samantha of Cardyke 11:33, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'd agree with that as the article has become very large and hard to use. I'd also at the same time argue for a reordering of the England sections to split the country up into regions (the same ones as used in many places: London, South East, South West, Yorkshire and the Humber etc and then by LEA within each of these regions. Evil Eye 12:48, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Since there are many more schools in England than hospitals, it may actually be wise to split the England article up into several lists for the regions (the regions as detailed here). I've had a go at the Yorkshire and the Humber region. I gathered all the schools together I could find in the main list and put them alphabetically under their LEA. Here is the link to my user space page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Evil_Eye/Yorkshire_and_the_Humber_Schools What do you think? Could we do separate pages like this for the 9 regions of England as well as separate lists for Scotland, Wales and NI? As you can se, the list for Yorkshire is already very large, but is also clearly very incomplete. Having more complete lists for the whole of England altogether would create a list bigger than the full one we have already.Evil Eye 13:49, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've now split the list by country (though the lists for Wales and Northern Ireland are still blank). Further splits within countries welcome. Samantha of Cardyke 12:29, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Independent Schools

edit

The list general seems to be split by LEA, but how do independent schools fit into this? Do they get places with the LEA they are part of or in a separate list? The current way seems to be to place then in the LEA they fall into. I'm really asking this question as I'm forming a break away list for the Yorkshire and Humber region and am considering a separate section for independent schools at the end of the main list.
