Odd use of headings
Am I alone in finding the use of headings very odd. Shouldn't the various headings after 'Literature in English' be sub-headings? What is the rationale for having separate sections for Belfast and Derry? I have not come across this before. And why 'Poetry after 1922' as a separate heading? and why emphasize 1922 at all, unless the whole article is structured around this date? There is also discussion of Ulster Scot's literature in this section. Finally should Philip Larkin be included simply because he briefly worked in Northern Ireland? - The importance of 1922 is that nothing called "Northern Ireland" existed; the province was established with six of the counties of Ulster while the other three were included in the Irish Free State. (This was only supposed to be a temporary situation until the border commission had proposed revised borders not necessarily on the county boundaries. This never happened.) The period as Northern Ireland is only about 90 years and there are many centuries of literary activity in Ulster before that. Many writers whose lives began here were emigrants e.g. C. S. Lewis to England, Seamus Heaney to the Republic of Ireland, etc.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 13:52, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the comment. However, I still find the the use of 1922, in 'Poetry in English after 1922', confusing. If this article was just about the literature of Northern Ireland, the use of 1922 here is redundant; and why isn't the whole section, 'Literature in English', so labelled? Also, it implies that there was poetry in Northern Ireland before 1922, and the period before 1922 is indeed dealt with in previous sections, which discuss works from "the territory of what is now Northern Ireland".
Perhaps the article needs to be re-organized into two sections: one dealing with Northern Ireland, and the other considering the literature of the same region of Ireland (part of Ulster) for period prior to 1922; this latter section might be headed, 'Literature from this region of Ireland prior to 1922'. A fuller discussion of the history of this part of Ireland, and the impact of the settling of Protestants in this region, is also needed, for added clarity. Hope this makes sense? - Shouldn't the date in fact be 1921 for Northern Ireland and 1922 for the South?
- Ireland was partitioned between Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland in 1921 under the terms of Lloyd George's Government of Ireland Act 1920.<ref>Northern Ireland became a distinct region of the United Kingdom, by Order in Council on 3 May 1921 (Statutory Rules & Orders published by authority (SR&O) 1921, No. 533) during the war of independence between Ireland and British forces.
