SECR R1 Class
editThis will need care, because the redlink SECR R1 Class is used for two unrelated classes, one being Kirtley's development of his own LCDR "R" class 0-6-0T, the other being Wainwright's rebuild of the Stirling "R" class 4-4-0. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:57, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
Cubitt on the London, Chatham and Dover
editIn the section Locomotives of the Southern Railway#London, Chatham and Dover Railway, William Cubitt is named. This is in accordance with
- Allan, Ian (1982) [1942]. The ABC of Southern Locomotives. Ian Allan. p. 21. ISBN 0-7110-1262-8. EX/82.
- Casserley, H.C.; Johnston, Stuart W. (1974) [1965]. Locomotives at the Grouping 1: Southern Railway. Shepperton: Ian Allan. p. 60. ISBN 0-7110-0552-4.
However, I don't think that this can be right. A thorough check of
- Bradley, D.L. (March 1979) [1960]. The Locomotive History of the London, Chatham & Dover Railway (2nd ed.). London: RCTS. ISBN 0-901115-47-9. OCLC 59838998.
does not turn up any instances of William Cubitt; the name Cubitt does occur several times (for example, on pages 8, 19, 20, and 33) but I can find only one place where this is qualified with a first name: on page 12, Joseph Cubitt is named in connection with the planning of Longhedge Works. Other books also name Joseph Cubitt in connection with the LCDR, for instance
- Marshall, John (1978). A Biographical Dictionary of Railway Engineers. Newton Abbot: David & Charles. p. 61. ISBN 0-7153-7489-3. LCCN 77085011.
a book which lists William Cubitt, but without mentioning the LCDR; and most importantly, in
- Nock, O.S. (1971) [1961]. The South Eastern and Chatham Railway. Shepperton: Ian Allan. p. 74. ISBN 0-7110-0268-1.
there is the sentence "At first Joseph Cubitt acted as locomotive superintendent, and he in turn called in Crampton." He is again named on p. 75. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:10, 5 November 2016 (UTC)
