I was very familiar with this area in that my rifle company, Charlie Company, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry (9th Infantry Division) was assigned just to the Northwest (same grid square, just east of Long Thanh on highway QL 15) of this location at a French rubber plantation, Ap Binh Son. We encountered a VC battalion-sized unit in the area (gathering food from the local Vietnamese villagers who were VC sympathizers and who worked for the French plantation owneres) for their unit from the hamlet (Ap Binh Son) and surprised them just before the Tet counteroffensive in 1968. Australian units were still operating in that area from their base in Vung Tau. Indeed, we exchanged officers with them and I had an Australian lieutenant as a platoon leader for about a month. Great troops! Armand 20:41, 18 August 2006 (UTC)Armand G De Cesare I moved the above comment from the main page to the talk page 59.167.166.140 05:46, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
This is more about the battle than the location
editThere is a detailed page on the Battle of Long Tan, so shouldn't the details of the battle be taken off this page and merged in with that? Mztourist (talk) 13:45, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: page moved to Long Tân, Ba Ria-Vung Tau. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 09:49, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
Long Tan → Long Tân – The content of this article should be moved and overwite the existing article Long Tân, Ba Ria-Vung Tau. Then, Long Tan should redirect to Long Tân. There are many commune places in Vietnam named Long Tân. Then, Cheers! (talk) 04:48, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- Wait, I'm not sure I understand your proposal. Long_Tân is currently a disambiguation page, while Long Tân, Ba Ria-Vung Tau is a redirect to Long Tan. Given there are many Long Tan's, perhaps it makes sense to have Long Tan redirect to Long_Tân, and have the current Long Tan renamed to Long Tân, Ba Ria-Vung Tau (or with some other way to disambiguate it from other similar places).--Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 15:18, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- This is not a conventional commune article, but rather a coat rack for the Battle of Long Tan. There is a book about the battle on GBooks, and someone is making a movie about it.[1] So that should be primary topic for the term Long Tan. Kauffner (talk) 23:43, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
- This is a bit of a mess. For "Long Tan -battle' the US Major League soccer player is evidently WP:PRIMARY. This commune is only notable for the battle and the battle has a full article. Additionally somewhere there needs to be a disamb page that also features Longtan in Burma and the Longtan Dam in China. In ictu oculi (talk) 00:57, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- Is the vietnamese long tan the same as the chinese longtan? Do they have the same derivation? --Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 04:32, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
- Vietnamese "long tan" mans "new dragon". Chinese Long Tan 龙潭 means "Dragon Shoal". Anthony Appleyard (talk) 10:07, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
