"Left-wing politics," eh?

edit

From the article: "Reiniger and Koch decided to emigrate (both were involved in left-wing politics)." Hmmm. "Left-wing"? How so? Was Reiniger a Communist? A Marxist? A socialist? Please tell, someone. 108.7.39.114 (talk) 12:10, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Citation needed for when she died

edit

Reiniger's death is flagged as citation needed. Is http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1468-0483.2010.01515.x/abstract sufficient? —Salton Finneger (talk) 20:07, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

I've got a citation for the location and year, but not the exact day. Is that ok?

Citation is: Lotte., Reiniger, (1975, ©1970). Shadow puppets, shadow theatres, and shadow films. Boston: Plays, Inc. ISBN 0823801985.

Irrelevant

edit

why is it relevant to mention she made a movie which precedes Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs? Those movie have nothing to with each other. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Justesting 1 (talkcontribs) 00:27, 26 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

It's not irrelevant. Disney's 1937 film is described as "the earliest Disney animated feature film". Reiniger's 1926 The Adventures of Prince Achmed is described as "the oldest surviving animated feature film", preceding Disney's by more than 10 years. Given that in the general population Disney is most assiciated with feature animations, it's helpful to provide this context, which I have restored. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 03:52, 26 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Education - Women Filmmakers' Course - New Sources

edit

Hi all, I'm a student involved in the Wikipedia Education program to improve this page. Listed here find my research sources and annotations for them.

Cavalier, Steven. The world history of animation // Animation. Berkeley : University of California Press, 2011.

  • A general historical source I have access to via our library. I'm mostly looking to use this for context, but also hoping it can lead me to some other sources on Reiniger as well.

Furniss, Maureen. (2009). Animation Art and Industry. Bloomington, IN : John Libbey Publishing.

  • A collection of academia. Chapter 2 is entitled "Some Critical Perspectives on Lotte Reiniger." I'm wondering if this isn't too academia/opinion/secondary source, but hopefully the citations of the chapter will lead me to something primary or more factual.

Kaes, Anton. (2016). The promise of cinema : German film theory, 1907-1933. Oakland, California : University of California Press.

  • Like the Furniss, this source appears a bit more critically oriented, but it covers so many German filmmakers that it may offer insights into Reiniger's process.

Reiniger, Lotte. Shadow puppets, shadow theatres, and shadow films. Boston : Plays, inc., 1975

  • At first glance, this appears to be a film stills book, but from the citations in the next source, it appears to contain production documentation as well.

Schönfeld, Christiane. (2006). Practicing modernity : female creativity in the Weimar Republic. Würzburg : Königshausen & Neumann.

  • An essay collection. Chapter 10 , titled "Lotte Reiniger and the Art of Animation," is partially biographical and also details the makings of Prince Achmed. The citation trail is rich with this piece, and may prove informative in and of itself.

Strobel, Christel & Hans. Lotte Reininger: Materialien zu ihren Marchen und Musikfilmen. Atlas Film + AV, 1988

  • This is an actual biography I found by following the citation trail in the Schönfeld. However, as of this writing I have yet to find an English translation. I plan to continue this hunt.

Using {{Cite book}} for sources
@Hlqu16: For placing your citations, I would suggest using the {{Cite book}} template via a couple of tools.
It provides the ISBN 9780823801985 & the OCLC 473132700 in the Details section.
<ref name="Reiniger 1975 p. ">{{cite book | last=Reiniger | first=Lotte | title=Shadow puppets, shadow theatres, and shadow films | publisher=Plays, Inc | publication-place=Boston | year=1975 | isbn=978-0-8238-0198-5 | page=}}</ref>
  • I prefer to edit the template code to remove hyphens from the ISBN, some spaces, & unnecessary blank information, & to add the OCLC # (I think the OCLC # is most important!) so the code then looks like this:
<ref name="Reiniger 1975">{{cite book |last=Reiniger |first=Lotte |title=Shadow puppets, shadow theatres, and shadow films |publisher=Plays, Inc |publication-place=Boston |year=1975 |isbn=9780823801985 |oclc=473132700}}</ref>

Peer review from your classmate EmoryStudentSuperstar
Hii Hans! I'm reviewing your article. Here are some suggestions I have after reading it:
1. Take out "from 1926" in the lead and replace it with "(1926)"
2. Change "Reiniger is also noted for having devised a predecessor to the first multiplane camera; she made more than 40 films, all using her invention." in the lead to "Reiniger devised a predecessor to the first multiplane camera and used it to make all 40-50 of her films."
3. Split the "Biography" section into "Early life" and "Career" and "Death." Under the "Career" section you can have subheadings like "Early films" and "Later films" or "1918-1930" and "1931-1980," since the 30s seem to be her period of stagnation because of the Nazi stuff.
4. Try to incorporate the small "Art style" section into her "Career" section, since it's really not that much.
5. Combine the "Legacy" and "Influence" sections, they're kind of the same thing.
6. Is the "Bibliography" section necessary? If any of those books are cited within the article they should just be included in the "References" section. I think "Further reading" sections are only for when there are full-length books out on the topic, not just chapters.
So - content-wise, everything is pretty good. I would just organize and condense the article a bit more :)

Why is Lotte Reiniger not listed as the inventor of the multi plane camera?

edit

Why is Lotte Reiniger not listed as the inventor of the multiplane camera, which she first used for her 1926 animated film “The Adventures of Prince Achmed”, but is only credited with inventing a predecessor to the first multiplane camera? Her multiplane camera was the first. From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotte_Reiniger?wprov=sfti1 “Reiniger is also noted for having devised a predecessor to the first multiplane camera”. First surviving feature-length animated film, not the first feature-length animated film of all animated films

edit

This is even mentioned in the article for the film itself, but The Adventures of Prince Achmed was preceded by El Apóstol. I'm new to Wikipedia (created an account to say this) so I'm not sure if I should just go in and make the change (adding the word "surviving" would do it, right?) or not.

I came here to write the same thing. Quirino Cristiani was producing political satire from his first short “La Intervención en la provincia de Buenos Aires” (1916) and feature-length El Apóstol (1917). This precedes Reiniger by some time. The fact that the films have not survived should be irrelevant.
Likewise, the paragraph that starts "Reiniger's films were the first to move animation from solely comedic narratives" is incorrect in light of Cristiani and should simply be removed. Robin726 (talk) 19:33, 29 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Multi-plane?

edit

The claim that Disney's Multi-plane camera was "based on technology" developed by Reiniger is a weak one.

There's no evidence that anyone at Disney had ever witnessed Reiniger's animation equipment or even saw one of her poorly-distributed films before "Snow White" was in production.

The article cited makes many unsupported assertions about Reiniger's influence. The notion that Reiniger invented the silhouette effect is an absurd one. Silhouette art has been around for centuries.

It's also not true that she was the first to create animation about serious topics. Winsor McKay's animated film about the sinking of the Lusitania would be one obvious counter-example. 2600:1700:5DD:310:64F0:EF1B:142B:CAEC (talk) 22:43, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
