Meeting Lou Harrison
editI was fortunate in 1969 to meet Lou Harrison at San Jose State University, following the wonderful all-Harrison concert presented by the San Jose State Music Department. There was a very large crowd in the auditorium and, although we did not always understand his musical language, most of us appreciated his originality and imagination. I had a chance to speak briefly to the composer, who had participated in some of the music by playing the unique Asian percussion instruments. To my surprise, he had a soft, rather high voice. He was a very gentle, considerate man with a wonderful smile. In some ways he resembled his friend Charles Ives, who also had a beard, but the conservative Ives had been troubled when another friend, Henry Cowell, had been arrested on a homosexual charge and one can only wonder if Ives knew or suspected that Harrison, too, had a secret life. By 1969, greater tolerance for homosexuality was becoming the norm, especially in California, and it really didn't matter to the students how Harrison chose to lead his life. We only recognized his great creativity and this became more apparent as more of his music was performed and even recorded. Fortunately, I taped most of that 1969 concert on a portable reel-to-reel recorder and I have since copied the aging tape to an audio cassette, which will make it possible to "burn" a CD of the performance. Composer project review
editI've reviewed this article as part of the Composers project review of its B-class articles. This article is barely B-class; it is deficient in content and writing style. My full review is on the comments page; questions and comments can be left here or my talk page. Magic♪piano 01:40, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Link to Peermusic Classical website
editThis information is being added so that English speaking readers will know the availability of works by Lou Harrison in the catalog of Peermusic Classical. Most composers’ works are represented by more than one publisher, which can cause consternation for interested parties. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.139.153.138 (talk) 20:08, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
added reference
editAdded citation link to liner notes, and for full disclosure I work for the non-profit educational resource linked to. The notes provide reference for several facts in this article, and the liner note quality is extremely high and is itself fully referenced.Ribbonabaca (talk) 15:37, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
Unclear compositions list
editThe list of compositions should be clear about whether it is a complete list. I don't think it is, since it is missing Koncherto Por La Violino Kun Perkuta Orkestro (as Harrison preferred it to be named in Esperanto). Unfortunately, the external links provided for this article does not include any definitive resource that attempts to list all his output.Tgkohn (talk) 14:47, 31 May 2015 [EST]
- In addition, many orchestral works are included under the chamber music heading. 217.38.187.87 (talk) 09:09, 13 November 2015 (UTC)

==Composers Project Assessment of Lou Harrison: 2008-12-16==
This is an assessment of article Lou Harrison by a member of the Composers project, according to its assessment criteria. This review was done by Magicpiano. If an article is well-cited, the reviewer is assuming that the article reflects reasonably current scholarship, and deficiencies in the historical record that are documented in a particular area will be appropriately scored. If insufficient inline citations are present, the reviewer will assume that deficiencies in that area may be cured, and that area may be scored down. Adherence to overall Wikipedia standards (WP:MOS, WP:WIAGA, WP:WIAFA) are the reviewer's opinion, and are not a substitute for the Wikipedia's processes for awarding Good Article or Featured Article status. ===Origins/family background/studies=== Does the article reflect what is known about the composer's background and childhood? If s/he received musical training as a child, who from, is the experience and nature of the early teachers' influences described?
===Early career=== Does the article indicate when s/he started composing, discuss early style, success/failure? Are other pedagogic and personal influences from this time on his/her music discussed?
===Mature career=== Does the article discuss his/her adult life and composition history? Are other pedagogic and personal influences from this time on his/her music discussed?
===List(s) of works=== Are lists of the composer's works in WP, linked from this article? If there are special catalogs (e.g. Köchel for Mozart, Hoboken for Haydn), are they used? If the composer has written more than 20-30 works, any exhaustive listing should be placed in a separate article.
===Critical appreciation=== Does the article discuss his/her style, reception by critics and the public (both during his/her life, and over time)?
===Illustrations and sound clips=== Does the article contain images of its subject, birthplace, gravesite or other memorials, important residences, manuscript pages, museums, etc? Does it contain samples of the composer's work (as composer and/or performer, if appropriate)? (Note that since many 20th-century works are copyrighted, it may not be possible to acquire more than brief fair use samples of those works, but efforts should be made to do so.) If an article is of high enough quality, do its images and media comply with image use policy and non-free content policy? (Adherence to these is needed for Good Article or Featured Article consideration, and is apparently a common reason for nominations being quick-failed.)
===References, sources and bibliography=== Does the article contain a suitable number of references? Does it contain sufficient inline citations? (For an article to pass Good Article nomination, every paragraph possibly excepting those in the lead, and every direct quotation, should have at least one footnote.) If appropriate, does it include Further Reading or Bibliography beyond the cited references?
===Structure and compliance with WP:MOS=== Does the article comply with Wikipedia style and layout guidelines, especially WP:MOS, WP:LEAD, WP:LAYOUT, and possibly WP:SIZE? (Article length is not generally significant, although Featured Articles Candidates may be questioned for excessive length.)
===Things that may be necessary to pass a Good Article review===
===Summary=== This is a somewhat disjointed biography. A number of facts appear to be thrown in at random, like the last sentence of the bio about working at Mills College -- great, put this in the proper place in the chronology, and give me dates. There is a mysterious reference to having been in North Carolina, but no indication of how he got there or why he was there. The early portion of the bio never mentions what instruments he learned to play (when), or characterizes his earliest compositions. Many facts are presented without enough chronological reference to get a good idea when, or over what time period, things happened. His partner is mentioned, but we do not know when the met, or what influence Colvig had, beyond one brief mention, on his music. While some of his works are described, a complete listing is missing. The article is also devoid of images and sound clips. The article appears to be largely sourced from a single source; more should be sought out. It also has few inline citations. This is a very minimal B-class article; it lacks elements of content and writing. Magic♪piano 01:35, 16 December 2008 (UTC) |
