Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball → Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns baseball — The "Louisiana's" usage is limited in scope largely to the university itself. The suggested usage is more common on a national scale. fuzzy510 (talk) 04:44, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

- Louisiana–Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns baseball → Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball
- Louisiana–Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns → Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns
- Louisiana–Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball → Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball
– They are now officially referred to as the Louisiana Rajin' Cajuns Source (see page 2): http://www.louisiana.edu/sites/louisiana/files/Graphics-Standards-2013.pdf. Other websites like Yahoo! Sports are also recognizing this change source: http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/teams/ssq/ . SportsMaster (talk) 18:16, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose Such a name change would appear to be in direct violation of Louisiana state law (see here). I would also like to point out that many of these pages and templates have already been moved while this move discussion is still open and in progress. Ejgreen77 (talk) 23:22, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
- It would not be a violation of Louisiana State law. That only applies to the university name. Which remains unchanged. I don't see how you can possibly argue with what they have written in the standards guide. It's very black and white. That is how they are to be referred too now. "The University’s athletic team name is Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns". This is what it says. --SportsMaster (talk) 01:22, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose All of these pages moved and edited by SportsMaster should not have been made without discussion and should be reverted immediately. This naming issue was has been discussed several times and as recently as June 2013, and the consensus opinion has been that the name should be Louisiana–Lafayette. This is the common naming convention that is used by both ESPN and Louisiana–Lafayette's conference, the Sun Belt. That should be the standard. The school's standards guide does not matter. Treydavis3 (talk) 05:46, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
- TreyDavis3 can you please provide a link to the consensus that was reached in June 2013?--SportsMaster (talk) 06:42, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
- It appears to me that the university is obviously quietly changing their athletic brand name. So I would guess the debate comes down too, are we going to acknowledge this change in athletic name that the school officially recognizes and other various media outlets, or are we going to continue to refer to them as Louisiana-Lafayette and not ever allow this new athletic branding to make its way into the mainstream by continuing to refer to them as Louisiana-Lafayette on Wikipedia. It makes no difference to me. The only reason I changed it was because that is the universities official stance, and they also changed their logo this year to go along with it. It's not unheard of for a university to not change its name, but to have a different athletic name. For example the Nebraska Cornhuskers are from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, not simply the University of Nebraska. Yet we do not refer to them as the Nebraska-Lincoln Cornhuskers.--SportsMaster (talk) 06:55, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
- Support Based on what I can see, reliable sources refer to the school Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. Per WP:COMMONNAME, the articles about the school's athletic teams should be Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. This is similar to what Wisconsin-Green Bay (Green Bay Phoenix) and Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Milwaukee Panthers) have done. If there is a disagreement about what reliable sources call the teams, I think we should defer to what the school would like to call itself. — X96lee15 (talk) 17:26, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
- Strong oppose - the University of Louisiana's sports teams include the Cajuns, to be sure, but they also include the Warhawks (see University of Louisiana). La-La has often strived to present itself as the U of Louisiana, hence their official naming protocol of course does everything it can to hide the fact that it is simply one of many mostly-independent campuses of the U of Louisiana system (most of which have very different names, like Louisiana Tech). We are not required to follow that rather silly path. X96lee15, you are misreading the request; this is not suggesting a move to Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns, as the UWGB and UWM moves did. This move request proposes Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, which is not the natural way to refer to teams representing the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Red Slash 01:04, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
- FWIW, I didn't misread the request. The examples I provided were for athletic programs rebranding themselves. SportsMaster provided a much better example of a school using a "different" name for its athletics as it does for its university (Nebraska). — X96lee15 (talk) 13:00, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose - As most reliable sources (including their own conference) continue to call them Louisiana–Lafeyette. If a majority of these sources adopt Louisiana, I will change to support. Billcasey905 (talk) 16:23, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Vandalism
editThis is beyond absurd: despite the fact that a compromise has been reached on this issue, a couple of people still feel the need to vandalize these pages.
As per below, the compromise that was agreed to (over a year ago) was that leaving in 'often referred' Is the solution:
"I agree 100% with Billcasey905. I'm fine with it saying that it is often referred to **insert name** with the source that is given, that's why I didn't revert Pncomeaux's edits. Until the other nicknames become a common name, it should stay as is. Corkythehornetfan 19:47, 27 May 2015 (UTC)"
Yet people continue to wreak havoc with the pages.
It must be noted that the school's legal, acceptable nickname of 'Louisusana Ragin Cajuns' can in NO WAY be considered to be "misleading propaganda."

Changing the name of the article to "Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns Baseball"
editHello,
I have made edits to the page saying that the official name of the UL athletics is "Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns" and thus the name of this page (and all of the athletic pages really) should reflect this official name. I am not intending to start any edit wars, so I would like to ope this talk page for discussion on changing the name and all references to the athletic team. If anyone dissents to these changes, I think it would be a healthy discussion. If my changes violate any terms, I understand why they are reverted. I believe a consensus can be made that this change is viable and merited.
Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.72.17.139 (talk) 04:03, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
- Its has already been discussed. See Talk:Louisiana–Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns#characterization of the non WP:COMMONNAME(s). We go by WP:COMMONNAME, not by the WP:OFFICIALNAME set by the Athletics Dept. Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 05:01, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
