I have edited this article to tighten the prose, eliminate less essential information, make it more concise, improve clarity, and add references. I removed month and day of birth to reduce identity theft of a living person. I put the name of Imperial College London as it was when Brown was there. I removed the paragraph on Brown’s visiting positions, which are common among many notable physicists. I removed some transitional sentences and phrases.
