Lower class is a distinct concept from working class, and so this article should not IMO simply redirect to working class. I couldn't readily put my hand on enough sources to work up even a brief article myself, but I have encountered in books mention of a "lower class mentality", characterized by a dearth of foresight and responsibility. This contrasts with the mentality of the working class (especially but not only if that term is broadly construed), which can include standards of personal conduct and the commitment to hold down a job long-term and provide for one's kin. Just a thought. Jbening (talk) 02:01, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Just discovered the article underclass, which itself links to american lower class. Both of those articles cite Dennis Gilbert's "The American Class Structure" (1998), which distinguishes lower class from working class. Now I'll fix articles like middle class, which links to lower class, and include instead links to both underclass and working class. Jbening (talk) 02:08, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
