FIRST FUEL ADDITIVE

This is factually incorrect and I have removed said claim. The Bell Performance company created the first fuel additive in 1909, predating the Lubrizol claim. Chancat74 (talk) 19:37, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Proposed History section

edit

Editors, I am Maureen and I have a conflict of interest as I work for The Lubrizol Corporation. I started an account on Wikipedia to improve this article, which is quite outdated and gives undue weight to certain subjects. I am in the process of creating drafts to divide this article into sections to bring it in line with other company articles on Wikipedia. To start, I have created a History section and posted it in my user space.

Can an editor, or editors, review the draft and move the edits into the live article if they are neutral and appropriately cited?

I noted this on my user page, but I will write it again here in the spirit of transparency: I have edited this article directly from this account previously. That was before I was familiar with Wikipedia's conflict of interest rules and Terms of Use. Those three edits were posted in late 2015 (November 24, 2015; November 24, 2015; and December 8, 2015). Now that I understand the rules more clearly, my involvement will stay on Talk pages. Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 21:44, 6 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Would you mind if your draft is edited before merging into main article ? There are certain issues that need to be addressed before merging it here. Devopam (talk) 07:21, 26 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Devopam: I am OK with that. Could you also share what issues you see here so I can respond and help if needed? Thank you. Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 15:29, 3 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
I see issues pertaining to WP:NPOV, WP:PEACOCK in sentences. E.g: "The 2000s saw The Lubrizol Corporation expand and diversify further. " -> It expanded operations and diversified in the 2000s by <doing what> ? . Hope the pointer is sufficient to identify such occurrences. Devopam (talk) 09:47, 4 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Devopam: The sentence you mentioned was intended to be a transition sentence introducing the two sentences that follow it. But since you thought it appeared to be WP:POV or WP:PEACOCK, I have deleted it from the draft. Are there any other sentences you think are problematic that I should address? Thank you. Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 21:50, 4 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Lz maor: , have a look at the edit. If you don't have an objection (for incorrect/factual representation of facts) I will move it to the article. Devopam (talk) 04:30, 5 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Devopam: Your edits look good to me and I think the draft is ready to be moved into the live article. Thank you for working with me on this! Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 18:47, 5 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

  Done

@Devopam: I see you were able to incorporate the History section. Thank you again for working with me on this. I will have more edit requests coming soon, including a proposed Operations section to organize information on current operations, ownership, leadership and key business segments. Proposed Operations section

edit

Editors, Similar to my work above, I have created an Operations section in my user space. Again, I am trying to bring this article in line with other company articles on Wikipedia.

This Operations section could replace the current About section. The About section is dated and gives undue weight. For example:

  • The 2010 total shareholder return figure is not significant for an encyclopedia article in 2017
  • 2011 Forbes Global 2000 ranking has already been added to the History section, where more context is given around the importance of the number
  • The Berkshire Hathaway acquisition is in History. Also, the last sentence of the third paragraph is not about Lubrizol. Does it belong on this page?
  • The manufacturing unit in India is just one part of our worldwide operations, so I do not understand why it is the only one mentioned in the article.
  • The paragraph on the fire in Leetsdale, Pennsylvania, is given far too much weight in this article. This was a breaking news story in 2015, but there was nearly no follow up coverage of it, so I question if it is important enough to include in an encyclopedia article.

@Devopam: Would you be interested in reviewing this draft, too? Thank you. Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 15:07, 10 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Lz maor: , I don't think in my humble opinion that a new section can be added , and replacing / renaming an existing section won't help much either. However, from your text, you may want to add a new section around Acquisitions and add few more details than just factual statements on the M&A stuff. Appreciate the effort in properly referencing the statements. Infobox can be enriched with some of the statements instead of putting them down in text e.g. CEO name, Annual earning et al. Devopam (talk) 09:23, 11 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Devopam: Thank you for reviewing my draft. Could you share the issues you have with it? I have seen other company articles with Operations or Overview sections that contain this kind of information, so I am curious why you do not think it is possible here. I would also like to understand why you think the About section should not be replaced. To me, the existing About section is outdated and, as detailed above, contains information that appears minor (for example, naming only one of Lubrizol's international manufacturing units, or stats from a six-year-old Fortune 500 list, which is not particularly relevant since Lubrizol is no longer a public company). Lastly, I agree that the infobox needs to be updated. Does including detail in the infobox exclude it from being used in the body of the article as well? Thank you again for any advice you can give to make this article better. Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 21:31, 12 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Lz maor:, I may be wrong in my assessment so I will leave it to some other editor to work on this rather. Devopam (talk) 04:54, 13 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Devopam: Thanks for replying. I posted notes on WikiProjects Companies and Ohio. If there is no response, can you think of any other places to try for more feedback? Thank you. Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 21:25, 20 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Lz maor:, you always have WP:TH for support ! Devopam (talk) 05:27, 27 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Maproom: Your January 31 edit addressed the first two bullets (above) in this edit request. If you get a chance, I would be interested in what you think of the rest of the request. Thank you for any advice you can give. Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 21:47, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Whoisjohngalt: Thank you for reviewing and updating this article!
I did notice a need for three small copy edits. Would you mind making them?
  • The first sentence in Operations has two periods at the end.
  • The last sentence of the first paragraph in Lubrizol Advanced Materials should be bumped down to the next paragraph.
  • The final bullet in Acquisitions and partnerships (Noveon) is tacked on to the preceding bullet point. Bumping that down to the next line should fix it.
Lastly, I see you did not incorporate Berkshire Hathaway, the company headquarters, employee count and the CEO into the body of the article. I realize these details are in the infobox, but do you think it might be helpful to readers if the information is also placed in context in the body of the article? I appreciate your guidance.
Thank you again for working with me on this! Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 13:52, 3 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Lz maor: You are most welcome and I will keep an eye on this article going forward. Whoisjohngalt (talk) 19:50, 4 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Proposed intro and infobox

edit

Editors, I am here with another edit request. Since editors have been so helpful in improving this article and giving it some structure, the intro and infobox draft I added to my user page essentially ties a few loose ends.

In the infobox, I'm looking to delete mention of oilfield solutions as a Division, as this is no longer correct. Secondly, Products can be listed as "Specialty chemicals, not "Lubricant additives and Speciality chemicals".

My draft adds a few tweaks to the existing intro. The changes include:

  • Adding the word "The" to the company's first reference
  • Changing the spelling "speciality" to "specialty"
  • Adding medical devices

@Whoisjohngalt: Could you also consider the appropriateness of the last two paragraphs of the History section? The manufacturing unit in India is just one part of our entire worldwide operations, and the Leetsdale, Pennsylvania, fire was a breaking news story with nearly no follow-up coverage, so I wonder if they should be included in an encyclopedia article.

Lastly, we mention in History that Lubrizol created a third business segment, Lubrizol Oilfield Solutions, following the purchase of businesses from Weatherford International. Since that segment is no longer part of Lubrizol's business, can we add the following:

  • The company announced that it the eliminated Lubrizol Oilfield Operations business segment in February 2017.[1]

Due to my stated COI, can an editor, or editors, review the draft and move the edits into the live article if they are neutral and appropriately cited? Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 19:31, 8 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Proposed updates

edit

Editors, I am here with a new request to update this article. These edits are largely aimed at updating this page and more-accurately describing the company's operations.

Infobox and introduction

edit

The following may be updated: revenue figure and number of employees in the infobox and the second sentence in the second paragraph of the introduction.

  • Revenue is approximately $6.5 billion (2016)[1][2]
  • Number of employees is approximately 8,300[1][2]

History

edit
  • Could the sentence "The company announced that it eliminated Lubrizol Oilfield Operations business segment in February 2017.[3]" be moved to the preceding paragraph, as it makes more sense there than as a standalone paragraph.
  • In the current Operations section, there is a subsection for Lubrizol LifeSciences, which makes it look like this is one of the company's business segments, whereas Lubrizol LifeSciences is actually a business under Lubrizol Advanced Materials. To clear up this confusion, could the Lubrizol LifeSciences subsection of Operations be deleted and the following paragraph be added at the end of History, including the LifeSciences material and other expansions:
    • Lubrizol's expansion in other areas of business in the 2000s included a 10-year phased investment plan launched in 2010.[4] The plan, which sought to increase global capacity in additives, featured a plant in Zhuhai, China, among others.[4] Additionally, the company expanded its life sciences unit with the announcement of a $60 million investment to expand its excipient, global polymer and contract manufacturing plants. The new facilities are expected to provide a flow through process for customers.[5] Lubrizol took the majority stake in Lubrizol India Private Ltd., its Indian joint venture with Indian Oil Corp., in March 2017.[6]

Operations

edit

Could the following introductory sentence be added to the Operations section:

  • The Lubrizol Corporation has 29 lab and technical facilities, 59 manufacturing sites and 49 sales offices worldwide.[7]

Due to my stated COI, can an editor, or editors, review this request and move the edits into the live article if they are neutral and appropriately cited? @Whoisjohngalt: You helped update this article before, do you have time to consider these edits? @Whoisjohngalt: Thank you for reviewing and updating this article! Can you also review my proposed updates for the infobox and introduction and History?
Also, the second sentence of Operations now reads, "The Lubrizol is broken down …" Could you delete "The" so it begins "Lubrizol is …"? Thanks! Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 14:21, 14 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Whoisjohngalt: I've reverted this addition. If it had a secondary source it might be appropriate to include, but as it was, referenced to the corporate website it just sounds completely promotional: "look what a big and important company we are". It's essentially WP:UNDUE. SmartSE (talk) 16:39, 14 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Smartse: Thanks for bringing up your concerns with my proposed Operations update. That sentence was not intended to be promotional. I thought it was informative, and I have seen other articles list different facilities and locations, which is why I presented it here. I understand Wikipedia requires secondary sources in most cases, but I was reading Wikipedia:No original research and thought this might apply for detail as uncontroversial as the number of facilities and offices: "A primary source may only be used on Wikipedia to make straightforward, descriptive statements of facts that can be verified by any educated person with access to the primary source but without further, specialized knowledge".
If you have time, can you also review my proposed updates for the infobox and introduction and History? Due to my stated COI, my involvement will stays Talk pages. Thanks! Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 18:00, 15 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Done @Lz maor:, your edits have been reviewed and added. If you can get me a secondary source for the number of offices, I will include.
@Whoisjohngalt: Thanks for your edits! If you have a minute, can you also update the revenue and employee figures in the introduction? If I can find a secondary source with information on facilities, I will ping you. Thanks! Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 19:32, 18 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
