editHow can a statement like "He won the 1973 tour because Eddy Merckx was not in it that year" possibly be proven true or false? MK 03:10, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Crash in the 1971 Tour
editAccording to Eddy Merckx: The Cannibal by Daniel Friebe (Ebury Press, 2012, page 222, ISBN 9780091943165): "what jerky footage exists of the crash suggests that Zoetemelk may have only glanced Ocaña and that it was the Portuguese rider Joaquim Agostinho who ploughed into him. This version has been confirmed in the past by Lucien Van Impe, who witnessed the accident from the inside of the bend. It is also backed up by Johny Schleck."--Rhodian (talk) 09:19, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
I am not at all sure about the narrative in the article here. I can't find any evidence elsewhere. that Ocana was trying to avoid the fallen Merckx when he crashed. All the other accounts simply say that they both came off, most agree it was at the same place. But the film of the accident - which is both edited and quite poor quality - doesn't seem to show Ocana avoiding anyone when he comes off at the bend. The conditions however really were atrocious. I've added a "citation needed" flag. Thomas Peardew (talk) 13:36, 23 July 2017 (UTC)
