Article title
editHello Obi2canibe. I saw you reversed my article rename from M. L. A. M. Hizbullah
to Mahamood Lebbe Alim Hizbullah
. No hard feelings, but I'd like to discuss. The only reason it is commonly used is because barely anyone knows their full name. As someone who has close links in Sri Lanka, I know that for a fact. Even official local news cant even spell their names properly. I would like to negotiate to move it to a shorter full name - Mahamood Hizbullah
, and avoid initials in the page title completely. We can start an move discussion if you like, or simply go ahead with the move. Cheers, P31?P40? (talk) 13:16, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
- @P31?P40?: Hi P31?P40?, welcome to Wikipedia. The reason I moved the article back to M. L. A. M. Hizbullah was to comply with WP:COMMONNAME which requires us to use most commonly used names. A quick Google search for M. L. A. M. Hizbullah returns 64,200 results whereas Mahamood Lebbe Alim Hizbullah only returns 66 results. I understand your point about different spellings but even if we were to add all the possible different spellings of Mahamood Lebbe Alim Hizbullah it would still not be the most commonly used name.
- It's quite common for Sri Lankan names to be initialised and we here in Wikipedia use the initials if it is the most common name. For example, we use D. S. Senanayake, not Don Stephen Senanayake; S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike, not Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike; S. J. V. Chelvanayakam, not Samuel James Veluppillai Chelvanayakam; and M. H. M. Ashraff, not Mohammed Hussain Mohammed Ashraff.--Obi2canibe (talk) 13:31, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for the comprehensive reply. For historical names, yes of course, they will remain as such, and your points are very valid. But random current politicians does not fall in this category. No one calls them
M. L. A. M. Hizbullah
orM. H. A. Haleem
in real life. And like I said, the only reason people use that name now in news articles, is because they don't know their full names, and don't even bother researching further. - A few weeks ago, those Google hit count would probably be a quarter of what it is today. And because Wikipedia lists their names that way, a number of Sri Lanka's lazy journalists just latch on the format, and keeps propagating it. P31?P40? (talk) 13:40, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

- @P31?P40?: WP:COMMONNAME applies to all articles on Wikipedia. We need to establish which is Hizbullah's most common name and stick to it. The fact that journalists may get the spelling wrong or that the name isn't used in everyday conversation isn't relevant. What's relevant is what written, English language reliable sources call him commonly. This, in my view, is M. L. A. M. Hizbullah.
- Using initials does not in any way hide the article on the world wide web. Indeed, if you were to search for "Mahamood Lebbe Alim Hizbullah" on Google, the very first result is this article. No one is going to miss out on any information about Hizbullah if we initialise his given names. All the information, including his given names, will be shown on search engines.--Obi2canibe (talk) 22:43, 6 June 2019 (UTC)
- Of course, I am aware of how searches work. My reasoning is only for what I mentioned above. Anyway, I don't have a strong view on this. If anyone else has an opinion, maybe they could share. Thanks for your time. Cheers, P31?P40? (talk) 03:51, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
