Merger proposal

I think that M1 road (Australia) could reasonably be merged into Highway 1 (Australia). The sections of M1 are just a subset of Highway 1, merging will allow this to be explained in context. Neither article is of substantial size, so there shouldn't be a problem as far as WP:TOOBIG is concerned. Evad37 [talk] 00:20, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

• Looking through this I'm thinking that Highway 1 (New South Wales) and for each other state is where it should be covered in detail the M1 sections here just a kind of WP:SYNTH or a group of sections of the road that beside being part of the #1 route dont have a direct relationship with each other. would also think creating a list like in National_Highway_(Australia)#Former_National_Highway_routes that details the #1 as well as any former sections would be useful adjunct to the articles, use this as the starting point the history would be retained Gnangarra 03:01, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Unfortunately I have to drive in Sydney quite a bit (I wish my daughter would move to Perth or Darwin) and M1 signs seem to be everywhere. Do we have a source confirming that those roads are part of Highway 1? I can find lots confirming the previous alignment, which was a single route through Sydney, sources confirming that there was going to be a reassessment, but I can't find any confirming that a single route has subsequently been split into several, which is inconsistent with what has been happening in the rest of the state, and which will therefore raise questions. --AussieLegend (✉) 09:25, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

M1 is a continuous route through Sydney - what makes you think otherwise? The source Evad37 mentioned shows the route - it's not very detailed but it is correct, and is supported by signs throughout Sydney. The M1/A1 route is also unchanged from the Metroad 1 route for quite a number of years (my guess is it's been over 10 years), so any recent map will also confirm the route. Four days ago a search of the RMS website turned up some documents (which strangely don't work now)[2] that showed the national highway as being a reasonably direct route from the Hume Motorway to the F3 via the Cumberland Highway. The map that Evad linked to doesn't show the M1 to be continuous or that it is Highway 1. If we assume that it is Highway 1, then Highway 1 would seem to be (south-north) M31-M5-M1-A1-M1 with the M1 interrupted by A1. It also goes through the centre of Sydney, while it previously followed a path on the outskirts of the city. This is exactly the opposite of what is being done everywhere else, with Highway 1 bypassing towns everywhere. This is an issue of verifiability. --AussieLegend (✉) 11:22, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

You'll need to back up your argument with a source that hasn't mysteriously vanished, but the key point here is that "National Highway" does not mean the same thing as "Highway 1" or "M1". It is true that the Cumberland Highway route was once declared a National Highway, but it was never Highway 1 or anything with a 1 in it. The "1" route (which over the years has changed from National Route 1 to Metroad 1 to M1/A1) always went from the Princes Highway to the Pacific Highway via the city - it has changed alignment a little but it has never gone anywhere near the Cumberland Highway. The article Highway 1 (New South Wales) accurately shows the route throughout the state, which consists of 8 sections alternating between A1 and M1. Ausmeerkat (talk) 11:32, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Reading through your comments again, it seems you have a different understanding of what Highway 1 means to me (and to the existing articles). Highway 1 is not an official route name; it's an unofficial term to cover the route that has been signed as "1" over the years, that includes National Route 1, National Highway 1, Metroad 1, and now M1 and A1. So by this definition, Highway 1 must follow A1 and M1. Now, as per Highways in New South Wales the Princes Highway has been gazetted by the government using the largely unknown designation of HW1 (and by chance, happens to also be a part of Highway 1 in the form of A1); however this is not what the Highway 1 articles are referring to. Well the article in question (M1 road (Australia)) covers the entire country, so I don't see how you can merge one article to many. There's already a redirect from M1 (New South Wales) to Highway 1 (New South Wales) and the same could be done for other states. Actually the Highway 1 (Australia) article already adequately covers M1 at the national level so maybe the best thing to do is turn M1 road (Australia) into a redirect? The idea would be to merge each state's section from this article into the relevant Highway 1 (state) article. Nothing actually needs to be done for Highway 1 (New South Wales) or Highway 1 (South Australia), as they already have the M1 sections listed. It would just be a case of moving the Queensland / Victoria info to Highway 1 (Queensland) / Highway 1 (Victoria), and then this could be turned into a redirect. - Evad37 [talk] 04:10, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
