editI suspect the primary source of diffusion for MOTSS, MOTOS and MOTAS as opposed to the full phrases comes through the internet via usenet and soc.motss. So I summarized the history of soc.motss from their own faq, and linked to the faq.
There was a claim regarding MOTAS that I edited out because I couldn't find it supported, and it is honestly news to me. While SO implies a committed or long-term relationship, MOT*S does not imply a romantic or sexual relationship. For example, "How do I respectfully turn down a MOTAS/MOTSS/MOTOS when I'm not interested?" MOTAS seems to still be widely used on usenet according to google.
Also, there was content regarding bisexuality and biphobia that I certainly agree with, but does not have much to do with the history or use of "MOTSS." It's a debate that probably should be included under the topic of bisexuality.
