Mabel Keaton Staupers was a significant (notable?) figure in both nursing and American history as an advocate for equal rights and an end to racial segregation in the American nursing profession.
She was also awarded the Spingarn Medal by the NAACP in 1951. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spingarn_Medal
Other receipients of this award include notables such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., General Colin L. Powell, Oprah Winfrey, Duke Ellington, Jackie Robinson, Alvin Ailey, Maya Angelou, Bill Cosby, Hank Aaron, and others.
