how old

Expand

edit

I realise this may be difficult for the die-hard older fans of the original series, but there is nothing about the reboot character in the article.

This article is about MacGyver as a character, and that does indeed include the new reboot-series.

Can someone start adding info about the new series character?

I am not familiar enough with the old one to begin chopping it about.

If no-one does anything, I will reluctantly add some info. Chaosdruid (talk) 11:52, 18 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

I've responded on your talk page. Vyselink (talk) 16:03, 18 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

After a bit of conversation with TheDoctorWho and Chaosdruid on their respective talk pages, I have edited the MacGyver page. Here are some of the major changes I have done and the explanations for them, as they would not have fit in the edit summary:

  • Make two different sections for the 1985 and 2016 series MacGyvers. They are not portrayed the same, and have different (albeit similar) backstories and personalities. Splitting the page will allow for a more accurate representation of both portrayals. Please see the Wo Fat page as an example of this. However, my knowledge of the new series is limited, and therefore for now I have simply taken the brief bio from the 2016 reboot page. Hopefully others more familiar with it will be able to add additional material.
  • Information in lead reduced so as to be more generic to the shared traits by both portrayals, rather than geared toward the RDA version.
  • Reformat many (though not all) episode citations (be great if the rest could be finished, but I'll probably get to it at some point.) Try to remove specific episode names from text into citations (may have missed a couple).
  • Move "MacGyver's Gear" section into personality. It's not big enough to be on it's own at the moment. If someone wishes to put it back please add to it to make it viable. Otherwise I think it fits well within the personality section.
  • Remove "in-universe" tag from Biography section. I have edited it to better fit in line with WP policy, and think it has been met.
  • Edit the page in order to be more concise and accurate. As one example: His birthdate is given in-show as January 23, 1951. The March date is WP:OR and therefore unacceptable here. Please do not change unless you can provide a reliable source. "But according to figures worked from this episode and this episode" etc is not WP:RS.
  • General clean-up and editing. Tried to remove pointless "trivia" from the page. Not every aspect of his personality or biography needs to be introduced, otherwise this page would be ridiculously big.

I am unsure exactly what to do with the merge proposal under the "Impact" heading, as I can actually find no discussion having taken place. I personally don't believe the section should be merged, as having read it it really refers to the show as a WHOLE, not specifically the character, but if someone finds the discussion please let me know. I'll leave it for now.

@Vyselink: alright I've added the second infobox as requested, I commented out the family in the 2016 section because I can't exactly remember which family members have appeared, I wanna say the father has but I may be wrong, but if you or anyone else knows for sure feel free to uncomment the appropriate pieces. @TheDoctorWho: Thank you very much! I'm hoping someone more familiar with the Lucas Till version will begin to expand it, though I might get the first two seasons and do so myself. Thanks for all the help with formatting! Vyselink (talk) 00:22, 25 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Vyselink: I have CBS All Access which includes all episodes of both the classic and new series, if or when I get time I'll watch some of it but I'm busy for the time being. TheDoctorWho (talk) 02:26, 25 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks guys ... great job! Chaosdruid (talk) 23:17, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Merger is stupid

edit

Merging the MacGyver (1985 TV series) article with the MacGyver character article is so stupid. And the MacGyver (2016 series) should have it's own article on Wikipedia.Catfurball (talk) 22:14, 25 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the thoughts on the merger. And the MacGyver (2016 reboot) does have its own page. It's linked twice in the lead alone. Vyselink (talk) 02:22, 26 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
On re-reading your comment I believe you meant that that MacGyver character from the 2016 show should have it's own page. I don't think it warrants one at the moment. The shows been on for two seasons (third is airing) and there isn't enough truly unique aspects about the character to build a good page on him. Also, as the ratings are declining for the new show, I doubt it will even have a fourth season. I've just finished watching the first season, so I will be expanding on the 2016 character over the next few days. Plus, as has been done with other similar pages (see Wo Fat and Steve McGarrett), splitting the page is proper when there simply isn't enough yet for a separate one. Vyselink (talk) 03:09, 26 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
It looks to me more like he just did not understand that there was no "merger", and that there are three articles ... MacGyver, MacGyver (1985 TV series) and MacGyver (2016 TV series) - but maybe they forgot to include the "TV" in their search for the 2016 series?
I can see how it might seem that using details from the series' article might be construed as a "merger" - but it wasn't done for the 1985 one !?!!? Chaosdruid (talk) 23:23, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
There had been a suggestion for a merger (see here) but I removed it when I was doing my revamp. The idea had been to merge the MacGyver (1985 TV series)#Impact section INTO the "Cultural Impact" section on this page. But I felt that that was absurd and would bloat this one way too much. It also just didn't belong in an article on the CHARACTER. Makes sense for the series as a whole page. Vyselink (talk) 00:40, 1 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Spoiling the first name right away?

edit

Given that the character's first name was famously kept secret for several years, it seems more than a little spoileriffic to mention it in the very first sentence of the article.

Since the character pretty much always uses only his last name, we might want to avoid mentioning the first name outside the section about the first name.

Since this is not a minor change, I thought it better to ask for opinions here first; I can do the editing later, unless there's some compelling reason for not doing so. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.112.233.60 (talk) 10:07, 23 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

While I realize this comment is nearly two years old, I thought I should respond in case anyone else brings it up. WP:Spoiler is the guideline here (and to a lesser extent WP:DISC). Essentially, WP does not care about spoilers being in the articles. They are supposed to be real world based, and therefore discussing/mentioning a characters full name, regardless of whether is is a "spoiler" or not, is appropriate.
