Talk:Madeleine Smith

Name

Is there any good reason why she is referred to in this article as "Madeleine" rather than "Smith"? Surnames are standard for encyclopedic writing. I know that James Smith is also mentioned in the article, but only once, so I doubt there would be confusion. 86.132.136.80 (talk) 11:13, 20 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Date of Death

You can find the date of death in Frederic Boase: Modern English Biography. --Ephraim33 (talk) 18:49, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, but what does he give, and on what authority? PatGallacher (talk) 19:31, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Madeleine's Smith's date of death (April 12, 1928) is provided on page 188 of Murder And Morality In Victorian Britain: The Story Of Madeleine Smith by scholars Eleanor Gordon & Gwyneth Nair (Manchester University Press, Manchester, England, 2009, paperback edition). Gordon & Nair had access to a private archive containing correspondence between Madeleine Smith Wardle and her family's Scottish lawyers. (The same date appears in the entry for Madeleine Smith Wardle in the England & Wales, National Probate Calendar 1861-1941, but that qualifies as original research and thus may not be cited here.) I would add a citation to Gordon & Nair to the article, but am very new to editing on Wikipedia and not confident that I will create the footnote properly.
