Genii: Easy to Open

edit

I'm not sure how to word this, but I have from experience opened locks that were magnetically oriented.

Padlocks generally, that had somehow turned up in places discarded ( I assume the owners either became frustrated with the design or lost the key ).

The application of a large, fist-sized speaker magnet to appropriate parts of the lock and then applying the right amount of torque on the locking arm can cause it to disengage.

I would produce a video demonstrating how, but I no longer have the magnets, or the locks.

The model I however discovered how to open was this: http://www.fast-locksmith.net/Blog/pros-and-cons-of-magnetic-keyed-locks.php#magnetic-keyed-padlock-product

Touting being unthwart-able, which is really untrue, just the technology required to open it is *really* inconvenient to have around, but once you have it, the lock can be opened in seconds.

edit

There is a freebase entry on the Genii lock this referring to a now deleted entry on Wikipedia on this lock. http://www.freebase.com/view/en/genii_magnetic_lock

So that link should burn or be reconstructed if there is good reason.

Decent takeapart of magnetic lock

edit

While stumbling about and killing time reading about locks here and there, I found a rather nice thread in which someone takes apart a magnetic lock at http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=11912 If anyone with better editing skills and the inclination to do so wishes to assimilate some of the info from there into this article...

Merge proposal

I have suggested that Magnetic-coded lock be merged into this article because it is short, and needs a lot of improvement. Both these pages are describing the same thing, which is, a lock operated by a magnetic key. Willh26 (talk) 21:19, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
