This stub was created in part to disambiguate Magnetic Surveying in Archaeology (book) from the subject in general. Much of Magnetic Surveying in Archaeology (book) summarizes principles of the subject in a generic way, and this material might be adapted to flesh out this article. Thoughts about expansion

The recently added section on Marine magnetic survey begs for a section on terrestrial applications, and a structure to handle information pertinent to both terrestrial and marine surveys. Perhaps something like this:

Marine magnetic surveys

Data processing

Further reading

Notes and references

Not necessarily in that order.

Magnetic survey in geophysics - disambiguation or rewrite?

Magnetic survey is used for a great variety of applications besides archaeology and is conducted on size scales ranging from archaeological to global. I considered adding a disambiguation with a link to magnetic survey (geophysics), but there would be a lot of redundancy. I would like to change this page to Magnetic survey with archaeology as one of the applications. Does anyone have an opinion on how this should be done? I think we definitely need a general page on magnetic survey. Because there are so many applications, they could only be treated very briefly in a more general article. It's true that the Magnetic survey (archaeology) article has remained brief, it could be developed much more fully (it is slowly creeping forward). This is the reason I spun it off of Geophysical survey (archaeology), along with some of the other commonly used methods. I would therefore argue to keep this page and add a link to a general article, and then create pages for other applications. I notice that there is already a stub for Aeromagnetic survey. Another reason for separate application-specific pages is that when you get beyond the generalities, the scale, instrumentation, methods, subjects of study, and objectives of different applications are so different that they might tend to confuse or overwhelm the reader when discussed together.

The even more general page Geophysical survey remains a stub, and really needs to be developed. As a historical note, the Geophysical survey page once dealt only with archaeological geophysics (and badly, too). Tapatio (talk) 15:10, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing out the pages for Geophysical survey and Aeromagnetic survey. It's a little scary how fast an edit of a given page can expand into multiple pages! The parts that I think are common among magnetic survey applications are the types of magnetometers. Do you like the idea of migrating these parts to the more general page, or would you like to leave them where they are? RockMagnetist (talk) 15:59, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Magnetometer has its own page as well! My inclination is to treat the various types of magnetometer and their operating princples there, and to briefly mention them where appropriate in the Magnetic survey and various application specific pages. For example, I don't think that it's necessary to explain how a fluxgate works in this article, but it might be appropriate to say that fluxgate sensors are often used (in gradiometer configurations only) and why this is so. A link to Magnetometer#Fluxgate_magnetometer will provide more technical information for anyone who cares.

Of course it is good to avoid redundancy, but to some extent it is unavoidable between pages on related topics. Perhaps a good guideline would be: where redundancy is necessary to make each page internally coherent, keep it brief and non-technical and provide a link to a page where it is dealt with more thoroughly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tapatio (talk • contribs) 16:29, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
