Purplish or Yellowish?
editThe paint colour 'magnolia' is pretty different from the colour magnolia depicted here (more a very pale peach). This could be my monitor, although it is calibrated. Should I edit the page to mention this?Paul E Nolan 23:54, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
I came to this discussion page for the same reason. UK Magnolia paint is closer to "Cosmic Latte" or "Old Lace" on that page than the "Magnolia". See also the picture of the Magnolia plant on that page Sweavo 12:36, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
Ok, updated UK-specific info with a pic of a flowering magnolia. Maybe US paint is the same as UK, but someone else will have to refactor in that case. Browsing the web there seems to be a case for either hue. How confusing! Sweavo 17:19, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
- I have just been decorating a flat, painting the walls with magnolia paint, and that colour here (in the UK) is not violet-like at all. It is, as Sweavo states, rather more like the colour labelled "cosmic latte" in the article (slightly more pale and yellowish maybe). Perhaps it would be a good idea to add the difference between US & UK's magnolia colour in the chart below as well. --80.5.88.40 (talk) 18:06, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
- I'm puzzled by the definition of magnolia as a pale purple too. I've been checking the X11 color names and the web colors article that was given as a reference but neither list any color name "magnolia", and no web browser I've tried recognises the color name "magnolia" either. It is however in the general list of colors article as a pale purple but that article's information is unsourced (the references don't seem to have any info on colour names). Some websites about colours do show magnolia as a pale purple, but none have a source for their info AFAICT. Unless someone can find a source for magnolia commonly being a pale purple outside of the UK, I am inclined to change the infobox to the creamy colour which is at least well defined in the UK due to British Standards for paint colour names. Also the OED defines magnolia as "a pale creamy-white colour". Samatarou (talk) 16:10, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
- Magnolia is not included in the X11 colours listed in the 1987 source of X11 (X11R1, in folder /util/rgb). Nor is magnolia included in the later versions of X11, so, lacking evidence to the contrary, I shall remove the X11 claim from the article. Batternut (talk) 10:49, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
I am rewriting the article as I believe the creamy colour used in the UK is the only major use of this colour name, however I will include mention of old American colour dictionary which shows it as a shade of purply brown. I have deleted the reference to a list of paint colours stored on the Resene website as the data in that file seems to be an old relic which contradicts their own website; moreover their use of the name magnolia seems to be an idiosyncratic one unique to that New Zealand company's paint range and even they have not used the name consistently. There remains the problem though that the colour templates and some other articles are using the questionable Resene colour list as their source for this and other colour names. Samatarou (talk) 04:10, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
- I would agree - the older Resene definition (248, 244, 255) seems to have been abandoned as their site now defines only "Resene Magnolia", ie their own version. Batternut (talk) 09:28, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
Authority for template?
editAre those colors in the template from the X window colors? Or are they browser-interpreted? Sweavo 12:36, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
