The twenty-eight Prophets of Mahábád

In the publication Tabernacle of Unity, Mánikchí Limjí Hataria asks the following question:

The Prophets of Mahábád, together with Zoroaster, were twenty-eight in number. Each one of them sought to exalt, rather than abrogate, the faith and religion of the others. Each one that appeared bore witness to the truth and veracity of the former law and religion and breathed no word about abolishing them. Each declared: ‘We are the bearers of a Revelation from God, which We deliver unto His servants.’

You're on the right track. Per fable (the Desatir text), a "School of Manners" (Dabistan) of X number of prophets, living at different periods, all bore the name 'Mahabad'. The backstory of this "School" is summarized in Dhalla (pp. 463-464), the first link in Jeff's list.

The second Dabistan referred to in Dhalla's text, which according to Dhalla owes much to the Desatir text, has a WP article: Dabistan-e-Madahib

In the article, The Dabestan-e Madaheb, or 'School of religious doctrines' - Section III is cited as a source. This is the "wrong" Dabestan (i.e. its the second one, from Akbar's time, Dabistan-e-Madahib) -- Fullstop 14:20, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
