editThe "List of doping cases in cycling" contained a thin accusation -- that because Major Taylor spoke of experiencing hallucinations, he was probably taking nitroglycerine. That accusation has been removed, so the link to the section is no longer appropriate.
(==1896==
- Marshall Taylor of the USA was the American champion. He refused to continue a New York race, saying: "I cannot go on with safety, for there is a man chasing me around the ring with a knife in his hand."[1] Nitroglycerine was used to stimulate the heart after cardiac attacks and was credited with improving riders' breathing, but they suffered hallucinations from the exhaustion and the drugs.[2])
Taylor was exhausted from riding for several hours during the six-day race at Madison Square Garden. He did complete this competition. [3] On page 18 of his autobiography, Taylor describes being "sleepy, hungry, thirsty and fatigued, and begged them to allow me to dismount." [4] KThistory (talk) 11:34, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
More appropriate might be a discussion of possible doping that pre-dated doping testing. Amanda bee (talk) 12:12, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Marshall Taylor → Major Taylor – As the velodrome, boulevard, society and association commemorating him all use the name "Major Taylor", this appears to be his WP:COMMONNAME by which the article should be titled. But I'm not a cycling expert, nor an American, so I await the comments of other editors. PamD 14:42, 30 November 2018 (UTC)--Relisted. –Ammarpad (talk) 06:01, 8 December 2018 (UTC)--Relisting. - Support. "Major Taylor" is used often as the title of books about him, it's used in the majority of international authority controls at VIAF and WorldCat, the Major Taylor Association, etc. --Animalparty! (talk) 02:26, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
- The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
World record regressed?
editThe list of world records shows 1:19 for 1 mile in 1899, followed by 1:33 2/5 for the same distance in 1908. Both are notated as motor-paced. How could the later mark have been a world record? 2601:642:C201:210:34D2:3969:AD0F:8101 (talk) 22:11, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
