Page move

As of Teen Titans #36, Mal is going by the name "Vox". Coyote42 and UltimatePyro tried to turn Herald (comics) into a redirect into Vox (comics), which doesn't exist yet. If we want the Mal Duncan article to be there, the thing to do is move it; that will preserve the history and place a redirect here. But do we want to do that? Is there a standard policy on what to do when a longstanding character changes his superhero name? Should we consider moving the page to Malcolm Duncan, per the example of Kyle Rayner (who isn't at Ion (comics))? Let's discuss. —Josiah Rowe (talk • contribs) 04:53, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I messed that one up... I'll take full blame on the lousy move job. The reason it was directed to a redlink was because I'd moved it already, but did a cut and paste instead of the normal procedure. And I'd say move it to the new name; because this was a dramatic shift for the character. As far as Kyle goes, I believe it's because he was a specific Green Lantern; the GL article basically covers the overview of the office. Coyote42 09:34, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

He plays a pretty prominent role in the current Teen Titans storyline by Geoff Johns, as a new member of the latest incarnation of the Doom Patrol. Since Johns is one of the current editorial architects of the DC Universe (he is, isn't he?) This character changes code names almost as often as Wasp changes her costumes. (Okay, a bit of hyperbole, but you get the idea.) If the article gets moved, I'd say go with Malcolm Duncan (comics) with redirects from the various code names. CovenantD 19:07, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

If it's being real-named, Mal Duncan would make most sense (WP:NCCom - you only go with (comics) if you absolutely must), since the character's never referred to as "Malcom". It'd be like moving the Parallax article to "Harold Jordan". - SoM 01:43, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

You're right - sometimes I get too formal with full names. If this is the way we choose to go somebody's going to have to get fancy and do a Request for Move because Mal Duncan is already a redirect to this article. CovenantD 02:11, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

I think that if we get a clear consensus here and the move is uncontroversial, I can take care of the move without going through RfM; I can just merge the histories of Herald (comics) and Mal Duncan, since they don't overlap. OK, I've merged the histories of Herald (comics) and Mal Duncan and moved the combined page to Mal Duncan. I didn't merge the history of Vox (comics), but I did restore it so that if anyone wants to see it it's visible. I've turned Vox (comics) and a bunch of other aliases into redirects to Mal Duncan, and made sure that there aren't any double redirects. I left the pages that referred to Mal as Herald as-is if they were discussing adventures he had under that alias, or the cartoon version; I reckon it's OK to have the redirect line in those circumstances. Guardian II or III?

I noticed an inconsistency: Guardian (DC Comics) calls Mal Guardian III (counting the Jim Harper clone as Guardian II). This page currently calls Mal Guardian II (presumably considering the original Jim Harper and his clone as the same). I'd consider Mal to be the 3rd to carry the name. Unless there's some kind of mind-transfer involved, clones are usually separate individuals from their genetic donors. CovenantD 16:21, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Move the caption

NOT DC's First Black Superhero

Modified it to be "one of DC's first black superheroes", because he was not, by any account (and supported by the reference itself, see below) the first one at all. Mal was a supporting character when he first appeared; and did not wear a costume and operate as a hero until he took on the Guardian identity, in November 1976. If, as it said in the reference, John Stewart had been introduced as a Green Lantern substitute (and actually wore the ring and costume) in 1971; no matter how sporadic his appearances were, he not only beats Mal Duncan's appearance as a superhero by almost 5 years, he beats his appearance as a character altogether by more than five years. Not to mention, of course, Tyroc, who appeared a full year before Mal, and appeared regularly in LSH stories until 1980.

"Mal Duncan did not have any powers, devices or costume until Teen Titans #44 (November 1976). Prior to that, John Stewart was introduced as a Green Lantern (and the designated substitute for Hal Jordan) in Green Lantern #87 (December 1971/January 1972). However, Stewart's appearances were sporadic until Green Lantern #182 (November 1984), when he temporarily became that title's primary character.
