The Big Ship Sails

The song/ nursery rhyme "The big ship sails on the alley alley o" is allegedly by Elizabeth Matterson. But lots of people seem to think it's about the Manchester Ship Canal: see e.g. here and here? Seems like it featured in the 1961 film A Taste of Honey, sung in 1961 by The Corona Kids: [1] (but that single credits John Addison as the writer, but I guess he was just the arranger).
