editHi, I am interested in Manoel Beckmann. As I am a German native speaker I write the name with double-n.
Two questions: Is there any evidence that he was really jewish? The german name is not, and Jewish people were expelled or christianized by force in Portugal by the Spanish Inquisation. Maybe his mother was of jewish origine. The figure appeared to my knowledge about 30 years ago and he was always referred to as a German in both brazilian and german sources.
Secondly, the linked article of "Journal Pequeno" seems to be extremly onesided. Never heard of free labor in 17th century Maranhão. I speak Portuguese and I am interested in further examination.
Best regards, Ulrich Beckmann 217.110.157.66 17:10, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
