Did I read that he had studied with Ryan Cuthbertson? OR was that someone else..

Certainly not in this terrible article. In all its breathless puffery, it doesn't even find the time to say who his main teacher was. 208.87.248.162 (talk) 22:31, 22 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Discography

edit

Once I can find the time, I will be creating a Marc-André Hamelin discography article. His recordings are clearly noteworthy enough to merit such a page - particularly as so many are of off-the-beaten-path repertoire. I welcome assistance from other editors.THD3 (talk) 20:50, 4 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Lead image

edit

There have been some attempts to replace the lead image with another that was not appropriate for the lead. Those edits were reverted, as were the reversions. I am including these remarks (which were sent to two of the editors involved) for reference: [The photo in question], while it's a very artistic one, is not appropriate for the lead in its present form. 1. the subject is off center, making the photo too wide. 2. The subject is facing away from the text of the article. If you look at biographical articles, you'll see the subject is either looking straight ahead or the head is angled toward the text. I would suggest the following: Crop the image so that the subject's head constitutes the approximate center of the photo; flip the photo so that the subject is facing toward the text. It's a good photo, and since Mr. Hamelin no longer wears glasses, gives a more realistic appearance. If the editor who uploaded the photo gives permission on this talk page, I will be happy to make the changes myself.THD3 (talk) 20:50, 4 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

IMSLP has a cropped version of that photo, which looks better. Double sharp (talk) 12:01, 28 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

References

edit

This article needs references. The Canadian Encyclopedia is the only legitimate reference cited here. Ethan Iverson's interview is a self published blog titled, "DO The Math." A blog is not a source. The Bach Cantatas Website is not a source either. It describes itself as "an international collective project, being compiled about various postings about the subject, most of which have been sent to the Bach mailing lists." Per Wikipedia guidelines, source means three things: the work itself (the article, book), the creator of the work (writer, journalist) and the publisher (New York Times). There are many published news articles on Marc Andre Hamelin. We need some editors who can start the process of gathering sources. Juri Koll (talk) 17:39, 7 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

"THE RINGTONE WALTZ"

edit

On here and his Discography page, perhaps we can add The Ringtone Waltz to his collection of composed works.

French Quebecer?

edit

Someone keeps removing [[Category:French Quebecers]], claiming that "the article doesn't support the claim". I'm not going to fight this windmill. This bold removal was followed by a revert, now argue your point here per WP:BRD. Hearfourmewesique (talk) 08:24, 4 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Categories must be supported by the article. The article makes no assertion that Hamelin is a French Quebecer, so the category should not be in the article as it stands. Toccata quarta (talk) 08:30, 4 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hamelin is a French name, Marc-André is a French name, Gilles (his father) is a French name. Hamelin's first college was a French-speaking one. Oh, and did I mention that he's from Montreal? Also, this source lists him as French Canadian. Hearfourmewesique (talk) 16:14, 4 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'm not disputing any of that, I'm just pointing out that it's unsourced. Toccata quarta (talk) 16:36, 4 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
How are French Quebecers different from French Canadians born in Quebec? Hearfourmewesique (talk) 21:23, 4 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Why did you ask me that question? I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about WP:REF. Toccata quarta (talk) 03:31, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I asked you that because it is sourced that he is a French Canadian who was born in Quebec, which is the definition of a French Quebecer. Hearfourmewesique (talk) 05:15, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

References must be placed in an article; "they exist" is not enough. Toccata quarta (talk) 05:45, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
The link I cited in this discussion is in the article. Hearfourmewesique (talk) 16:50, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Alright, I have now changed the article so that it supports the category. Toccata quarta (talk) 16:59, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
