I edited this article and my edits were quickly undone with a note saying something to the effect of "please don't delete large sections of the article." Well, sometimes editors have to cut things to improve an article. The current version is a mess: could you please compare it with my edit, and make a case for he importance of anything that I cut? I can't see how the death of caller Freddy Anderson or the fact that Mr. KABC used to say his guests were just "hanging" really serve the project of concise description of who he is and what he does. Just because something is factual, that doesn't mean it should be included. BTfromLA 17:25, 17 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

On the other hand, wikipedia can afford to be less concise and more comprehensive than other media. "Hanging" is important because the show originally began on KFI as an outgrowth of his time as a call screener (as he has discussed many times on the show and in several profiles in local media). In fact, he had people hanging with him because he couldn't afford guests, back when he was "broadcasting from work release from Century City Prison for not balancing my checkbook". Freddy Andersen did call in many times to the show, and his death is of some note to listeners of the show. Look at the entry for any other talk show host and you'll find lots and lots of information. See, for instance, Phil Hendrie and look how long that entry is. So, the point still stands: don't delete large sections of an article. Deletions should only be made for instances when something is untrue, to edit words without deleting relevant facts, or when discussed with the other relevant people in talk. Please also see Wikipedia:Avoiding_common_mistakes for more information. Don't let this discourage you from editing and adding what you know, but please read this FAQ before considering a wholesale rewrite with deletion of facts like you did earlier. Calwatch 20:36, 17 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your reply. The article was rambling and poorly constructed--it had the appearance of a recently-created page that had not been the subject of extensive prior editing (in contrast to the Phil Hendrie page, say). And it was short, both before and after my edit. So I'm not persuaded that I violated the dictum against "deleting useful content," but I am guilty of deleting without providing a written justification--sorry. While you are correct that Wikipedia doesn't have the same length limitations that printed articles do, I don't think that fact argues against striving for concise, readable, well organized prose. If you want to list notable callers and what is known about their personal lives, I'd suggest a separate subsection (similar to the section that describes each of Hendrie's characters). But I doubt that is called for here. Freddy Andreson called several KABC hosts regulalry: should his death be noted on all of their pages? And the "hanging" story seems dubious--he couldn't afford guests? News to me if radio talk shows pay their guests. My guess is that he used "hanging" as another attempt to distinguish his show from the standard talk-show formats. ("No guests, no topics, no screeners.") And some of the material you restored is just wrong: his format is not similar to "Jeopardy!" In any case, I'd submit that the current edit, while longer, is a less readable and less informative introducion to Mr KABC than the shorter version that I edited. Other opinions are welcome. Since you seem relucant to cut anything, I don't think I'll make any further attempts to improve the article, since cutting would inevitably be involved. BTfromLA 21:23, 17 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Sources

edit

In common with many articles about radio talk show personalities, this article does not cite its sources. It is possible that it contains considerable original research in the form of the opinions of listeners. I don't know if any sources are available to characterize the show or its host, but without such sources we should not write our own impressions. -Will Beback 17:59, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Discussion to change name of article

edit

Since Mr. Germain is no longer to be known as Mr. KABC wouldn't it be appropriate to move this article to a new name such as Marc Germain or Marc "Mr. K" Germain. Please provide your input on what should be done. They call me Mr. Pibb 20:00, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I suggest we wait until it's clear what name he's using at his new station. If he starts using his real name, then a change to "Marc Germain" would make sense. In the meantime, Marc Germain should be made a redirect to this page, if it isn't already. BTfromLA 20:33, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well it will be one of three possibilities: "Mr K" or "Mr. KTLK" or "Marc Germain". My sense is "Mr. K" - but time will tell. 69.154.19.81 22:32, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Based on the "Sneak preview" show, it sound like he will definitely be going by his given name although "Mr K" will be used also. My "vote" goes to renaming the page: "Marc Germain" with also adding a redirect from "Mr. K". 69.154.19.81 07:03, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good to me. BTfromLA 08:05, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Notability tag

edit

I have restored the notability tag. Local radio presenters are often not notable for Wikipedia. Please check WP:NOTE and specifically WP:BIO to see what kind of sources we expect to establish notability. Currently, this article has no reliable, independent sources (the LA Observer link is not a reliable source). As long as these are not added, the notability tag is valid and should remain. Fram 08:54, 9 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Can you please supply one example of a local radio talk host who has had his or her own daily program on high-profile radio stations in a market the size of Los Angeles for fifteen years who is "not notable for Wikipedia"? BTfromLA 00:22, 11 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
If he is that notable, it should be easy to provide reliable independent sources with indepth coverage of him. Interviews in newspapers or something similar, perhaps. I don't claim that he isn't notable, I just note that nothing in the current article is sufficient to indicate that he is notable according to the Wikipedia standards, as explained in WP:BIO.
