editThe illustration for this article is hideous and looks like it was drawn by a nine year-old. Chris Buckey 05:08, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
This is a paltry entry for such a hugely influential anthropologist/sociologist. Mauss is much more than his theory of The Gift, and highlighting only this portion of his work shows both the limitations and biases of the writer of this entry--due, largely, no doubt to his/her reading (see references). At the very least, an analysis/summary similar to the above one on The Gift needs to be made regarding his essay on the "Techniques of the Body"--as well as a detailed summary/analysis of his work with Durkheim and Hubert (beyond a mere mention). As the writer mentions, the influence of Mauss can be felt across the board--from Foucault to Bourdieu (habitus) to exchange theory to any respectable classification theory--an influence that stems from ALL of Mauss's works, not just The Gift. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.49.252.53 (talk) 02:55, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
French pronunciation?
editHi, I would like to know the french pronunciation for Mauss. Could anybody write that in the article? That would be great. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cheb Khaled (talk • contribs) 18:22, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
no mention of mana?or habitus
editit is mentioned that his ideas of magic are seen as a large part of his contributions but mana is not even mention. or habitus ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habitus_(sociology) ). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.186.242.58 (talk) 07:26, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Neutrality
editThis article state’s the man’s premises as if they were true, possibly making the reader want to argue with the article. It is possible that many people do not feed indebted when they receive a gift, such as children.--Rhbsihvi (talk) 20:00, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
- I can't see what you are referring to. Mauss' views are set out in the "Theoretical views" section. This section seems to paraphrase Mauss' views fairly well and there are several quotations. There is a "Criticism" section (at least as long) that sets out countervailing points of view. If anything, I would say that the Criticism section provides too much weight to the arguments against Mauss' theory (which remains influential, despite its flaws). Would you be able to provide further explanation for the tag? Sunray (talk) 08:08, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
