Spelling of Name
editI'm guessing it's just a typo that has his name with one L in the lede. I've seen that spelling elsewhere but reliable sites like this one always spell it with two. Also, I'm taking the hyphens out -- he was only known by one name, which means that the others can be treated like middle names. Nick (talk) 14:26, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
As a historian of science who has written about Berthelot, I can confirm that the generally accepted spelling of his first name has two "l"s. He himself always wrote his name this way, and most (though not all) historians of science follow his preference. The reason one sees some reputable sources spelling the name with only one "l" is that this is how his name appears in his birth register of 1827. Most historians have simply assumed that this was a casual mistake in 1827, and have followed Berthelot's own lifelong preference. As for the two unused forenames, it was very common in the nineteenth century for people to ignore certain of their forenames. I agree fully that the article is correctly named simply as "Marcellin Berthelot".Ajrocke (talk) 18:04, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

One L, Marcelin as first of first name.
Vitalism
editDoes anyone have anything on Berthelot and vitalism? Like what Berthelot thought of Jöns Jakob Berzelius's organic-inorganic distinction. It's rather obvious that Berthelot supplied enough counterevidence to discredit that hypothesis as a "vital force of the gaps" one, but did he himself think so? His colleagues?
