User:Sminthopsis84 — I believe you are mistaken. Full-time in this context (continue with mountaineering full time) requires the hyphen, I believe - but I will do some more research on that. As you say, "It's not an adjective preceding a noun" — but adjectives don't have to precede nouns. In this context, at any rate, it's being used as an adverb, not an adjective, and I believe it still requires the hyphen. David Cannon (talk) 01:04, 23 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry, I've just looked up a grammar book and find that I'm the one with the mistaken ideas here. So I've just reverted myself. My apologies. David Cannon (talk) 01:06, 23 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
Well, this should really be settled by an Australian grammar reference, the like of which I don't have to hand. The Chicago Manual of Style would insist on spelling "full-time mountaineering" versus "mountaineering full time". However, I just asked a grammarian, who said that he doesn't favour the Chicago Manual's view, so this is clearly a matter of personal preference. So if we agree, that is excellent, even unexpected. Yes, the Macquarie Dictionary is Australian, but it is a dictionary, whereas what is needed here is a style manual, such as Modern Australian Usage. The way I would analyze this example is that in "full-time mountaineering", "mountaineering" is a noun, and "full-time" is a compound attributive adjective; in "mountaineering full time", "mountaineering" is a gerund, and "full time" is adverbial. Unlike the Chicago Manual, wiktionary does accept hyphenation of the adverbial form. Wiktionary also considers "fulltime" to be a word. I'd therefore accept any of those three forms here (though would personally only use "mountaineering full time"). Sminthopsis84 (talk) 11:52, 23 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
