Religious Exemptions Apply to Any Type of Marriage

edit

The religious exemptions allow a religious organization to refuse services or accommodations in connection to any wedding in contradiction to its religious doctrine. If a religion doesn't believe in interracial marriage, then they cannot be coerced into officiating at an interracial marriage. I have corrected the article where it mentions only same-sex couples in the religious exemptions clause. The Marriage Equality Act does not create two types of marriages — same-sex and opposite-sex — whereby it is legally permissible to discriminate against one type but not the other. All marriages are treated equally under the law and in the ability for religious organizations to discriminate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.233.134.228 (talk) 23:39, 25 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Timing

How long did it take (or will it take) for the other chamber of the NYS legislature to approve the bill that the Senate passed? Did the governor sign the bill last night? --Uncle Ed (talk) 17:10, 25 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

It passed the Assembly two weeks ago without the amendments. Then yesterday the Assembly passed the amendments. Then the Senate added the amendments to the bill and passed it. The Gov. signed it into law last last night. See this Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 17:15, 25 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Oh, thanks for explaining that. Based on the news stories I had read, I thought that the Senate had come up with amendments (compromises) of its own, and that it might take a few days for the Assembly to consider those changes. Seems I got it exactly backwards. --Uncle Ed (talk) 17:18, 25 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
