Speculation about price tag

edit

Is it correct to include a "reported price tag" for a player? BBC claims it is £12m, but does not report their source. No official price tag has been given by the club. I believe it's not something that should be in an encyclopedia. Cashewnøtt (talk) 21:47, 19 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Add a Photo

edit

As of now he is a rising star who has at the age of 15 played not only for the first team of his club but also for the national team of Norway. I think a photo should now be required.--Sammanhumagain (talk) 09:47, 7 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Photos are not added simply because of the notability of the player. On Wikipedia we do not use copyrighted photos of living people except in exceptional circumstances - for example for fugitives or people in long-term imprisonment, which this person clearly is not. We can only use photos that users took themselves, or photos where the author has explicitly said that such use will be permitted '''tAD''' (talk) 20:24, 7 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
I found this photo in WikiCommons but am not entirely sure if that's Odegaard himself after looking at other photos on Google. If anyone can confirm that it is indeed Odegaard, we could add it to the main page even if it's not the best quality. LRD 03:26, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

I can confirm that it is him. Cashewnøtt (talk) 07:05, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I couldn't be sure since this is the first time I've seen his photo and the one that we have isn't of the best angle or quality. I have changed the format under the image parameter to the proper one. cheers. LRD 07:27, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

A non-exhaustive list of comments regarding the prose, follows:

  • "Ødegaard, who played for Strømsgodset's junior team and the club's third team, began training with the Strømsgodset first team in 2012, aged 13, making his first team debut in a pre-season friendly against local rivals Mjøndalen IF." What about two sentences here, in chronological order?
  • "In January 2014, it was agreed that Ødegaard would be part of Strømsgodset's first team in 2014, but no contract was signed." of what significance is this verbal agreement?
  • "He completed his official league debut for Strømsgodset in a match against Aalesunds FK at Marienlyst Stadion on 13 April 2014." what is an official league debut? 'made' not 'completed'
  • "He signed a professional contract for 2014 and 2015 with Strømsgodset on 5 May 2014.[7]" seasons? years? until 2015?
  • "On 16 May 2014, he scored the fourth goal for Strømsgodset in a 4–1 home victory against Sarpsborg 08 FF making him the youngest person to score a goal in Tippeligaen.[6]" I can see two important things here, his first goal and becoming the youngest to score in the league, but the sentence asserts the fact it was the fourth goal of the match as the most important
  • "His major breakthrough happened with the away match against Sandnes Ulf, in late July, where he was involved in all three goals of his team, scoring one and having one assist. He was also fouled for a penalty, which was missed by Thomas Sørum. After the match, media were discussing his possible debut on the Norwegian national team." general prose issues
  • "Since signing, Ødegaard trains with the club's first team, but is registered to play for its reserves, managed by Zinedine Zidane." has trained, suggest explicitly including the name of the [reserve] team
  • Another sentence or two about the under-17 would be better than the current single sentence. Which games did he play in, for example?
  • "On 19 August 2014, he was called up" Ødegaard was called up
  • "has since completed the compulsory education in Norway" why does 'compulsory education in Norway' link to the article it does? the education or his education?

C679 12:06, 5 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • Further content issues (up to the end of club career): "23 appearances" is apparently league only, should be specified. "Drammen Strong" is listed in the infobox but nowhere in the body of the article.
  • "Aged 15 years and 117 days, he became the youngest footballer ever to play in Tippeligaen.[5]" I don't read Norwegian but couldn't find "117" at fn5. fn6 seems to list this as 118 days
  • fn18 doesn't support the text
  • Further comments:
  • "who plays as an attacking midfielder for Spanish club Real Madrid and the Norway national team." This is the opening line and it is somewhat of a misnomer, as he doesn't actually play for Real Madrid
  • "he impressed during an nationwide tournament" - a nationwide tournament, but also who did he impress?

  • "Since signing, Ødegaard has trained with the club's first team, but is registered to play for its reserves Real Madrid Castilla, managed by Zinedine Zidane.[28]" potentially dated language
  • Done. Cashewnøtt (talk) 21:53, 9 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • "selected for Norway Under-21" but other youth teams all introduced as "Norway national under-..."
    • Done.
  • This article has gone through quite a change since I started it. All issues appear to be in order, but I am going to have another read-through at some point, before closing the review, just to be sure. C679 11:58, 12 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Martin Ødegaard's appearances and goals for Strømsgodset 2 and Strømsgodset 3 must be represented in the infobox. Strømsgodset 2 and Strømsgodset 3 participate in the main senior domestic league system. [1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Knutarnesel (talkcontribs) 10:54, 5 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Cashewnøtt: you brought this to GAN in 2015. Would you be able to handle this request? Z1720 (talk) 01:02, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Z1720 I can get to this eventually (hopefully within the next few days when less busy), according to the reference Strømsgodset 2 participates in the top league so should indeed be included. You could simply copy an entry in the source code and change the team to Strømsgodset 2 within that section of the infobox to add it yourself if you'd like to. TylerBurden (talk) 06:58, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@TylerBurden Strømsgodset 2 participates on the fourth level. Cashewnøtt (talk) 15:13, 8 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Right, just saw the lower table, which states he played in the lower divisions whilst with those teams. I believe normally such leagues are not included in the lead infobox, @Knutarnesel you can reactivate the request if you can point to a guideline or the like which supports inclusion of those statistics. TylerBurden (talk) 17:22, 9 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
I've been thinking about this. The Norwegian league system allows for a second team (reserves) be promoted up to the third level. It is considered professional by the Norwegian FA, so I believe it would be correct to include Ødegaard's matches for this team, since Strømsgodset 2 played on the third level at the time. So in conclusion, I think we should add his 5 matches for Strømsgodset 2 in 2013-2014 after all. (Strømsgodset TF2 is a newer name for the same team). Cashewnøtt (talk) 10:03, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
I couldn't find a specific guideline, but the infobox itself says that it includes appearances and goals in the domestic league. Let's say Ødegaard had played for a club who had their first team in the same division Strømsgodset 2 or Strømsgodset 3 played in. Surely these appearances and goals would be included without question? I don't understand why it matters that it's a second or third team. BOTH Strømsgodset 2 and Strømsgodset 3 should be in the infobox. Are there guidelines I'm missing? I can also show to Jamie Vardy's article where his appearances and goals with FC Halifax Town in the NPL Premier Division, which is an amateur league is included in the infobox. Knutarnesel (talk) 11:32, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Sounds reasonable to me, feel free to add it either of you @Cashewnøtt @Knutarnesel since you are probably more familiar with his appearances there than I am. TylerBurden (talk) 13:25, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Change main image

edit

Image outdated as he plays for Arsenal now and no longer at Real Madrid. Suggest it gets updated Wikifeedia1 (talk) 01:50, 16 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Do you know of any good images without copyright issues? That is generally the problem with updating pictures on Wikipedia, see WP:COPYRIGHT. TylerBurden (talk) 01:59, 16 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
There are a couple of photos of him with Arsenal on commons, but they're not of good enough quality to be the main infobox image. If someone attends an Arsenal game, bring a good camera and try to snap a pic of Martin I guess. :P TylerBurden (talk) 02:07, 16 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Strømsgodset 2 and Strømsgodset 3 appearances does not represent senior career

edit

I see someone has added Strømsgodset 2 and Strømsgodset 3 to the senior career. This must be removed or placed with youth career. Saeetre (talk) 14:23, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Some articles I have read say it is just one award for the months of November and December and others say it is two separate awards. MayoForSam2023 (talk) 09:43, 22 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Captaincy in lead

edit

To avoid further edit warring, it would probably be a good idea to have a discussion here regarding Ødegaard's captain status being included in the immediate lead. Even after the page was semi-protected, many editors seem to believe it is notable enough to be mentioned straight away, with seemingly only @Mattythewhite reverting the edits. @Profavi1 made the point in their most recent revert that both Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane, both of them high profile football articles, have their captaincy status mentioned straight away. Matty, page history on both shows you active within the month on both articles, yet you are making no efforts to remove the captain status on them as you are doing here. Why is this article different? TylerBurden (talk) 05:32, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for this! Could I add - Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kevin De Bruyne, Diego Godín, Álvaro Morata and Leonardo Bonucci are more pages of notable football captains which all follow the same convention, so there is no reason to omit the captaincy from the opening statement of Martin Ødegaard's page Profavi1 (talk) 18:34, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Way too little objective

edit

Another Wikipedia-page that looks like a 13 year old girl has written it in her diary. Re-write it now as Wikipedia is claming to be a serious and objective enclypedia, and you fans are not helping them at all 188.113.95.213 (talk) 14:37, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

"Re-write it now" is not very constructive or helpful, perhaps you have some more concrete suggestions on how to not make it look like it was written by a "13 year old girl"? TylerBurden (talk) 19:53, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Maybe you should read the whole article and you should know what i'm talking about. Unless you're the one who's writing this diary that's not objective at all. This WHOLE THING should be re-written.

But here is just a piece to help you find out what should be at least deletetet: "Considered one of the best midfielders in the world, he is known for his technique, dribbling ability, vision and range of passing." And much more, just to satisfy the enclypidia rules that also Wikipedia is ruled by188.113.95.213 (talk) 08:32, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I don't think you have much understanding of Wikipedia's policies, because that part is supported by WP:RS, as he has been named one of the best midfielders by several publications that are considered reliable sources. Feel free to cite whatever "rule" you are talking about. TylerBurden (talk) 20:11, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
