Talk:Marty York

Latest comment: 2 years ago by Budgelevel in topic Resubmission - October 3, 2022

As requested, three key sources for this article:

  • York, Marty (2001-02-13). "Farewell, after 28 Globe seasons". The Globe and Mail. Retrieved 2022-04-10.
This piece is by York, whereas we need to see pieces that are about York, to demonstrate notability.
  • Seow, Anthony (1992-06-16). "Whipping Boy". Review of Journalism : The School of Journalism. Retrieved 2022-04-10.
This is a good reference that shows that reliable, independent publications have written in depth about him. More of these please.

Hi there!

Upon further research based on the feedback when this was first submitted, I am seeking to add the following two sources as examples of notability (in addition to the one above that was accepted as legitimate):

  1. An ESPN article discussing one of York's controversial reports: https://www.espn.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/2645/sam-mitchell-in-the-crosshairs
  2. A book chapter (Chapter 7 - "The Enemy") focused on York's cultural role in the Toronto Argonauts 1982 season: https://books.google.ca/books?id=7UmdBQAAQBAJ&pg=PA77&source=gbs_toc_r&cad=3#v=onepage&q&f=false

I was also able to locate some print articles from York's heyday which cover him in more detail, but since they are older I have not found them available online. Please advise if there is a way these can still be submitted or used if the above two sources are not sufficient to demonstrate notability.

Hi. The ESPN source is not very strong. I am unable to access the book chapter but if your summary is accurate then it sounds like a good source. Yes please add those older sources: there is no requirement in Wikipedia that sources must be online, only that sources can be verified. Cabrils (talk) 00:39, 9 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Would this count as a valid third source? It is from a podcast host, and is moreso about York's philosophy within sports than about his life per se

I have reviewed the article, both to improve the content and sourcing as well as to provide three key sources to demonstrate notability.

Previous reviewers have indicated that the following two sources are acceptable as key sources:

1) https://rrj.ca/whipping-boy/

2) https://books.google.ca/books?id=7UmdBQAAQBAJ&pg=PA77&source=gbs_toc_r&cad=3#v=onepage&q&f=false (Chapter 7 - "The Enemy")

3) Borenstein, Jack (September 1, 2005). "Sports' Marty York returns to his print media roots". The Jewish Tribune. p. 11. Retrieved November 11, 2022. Link to Photo of the article: https://imgur.com/a/ntmPzRE

Here are a few options for potential other sources (if none of these are sufficient, I will need some help in learning how to cite a print source, as the others I am aware of do not appear to be accessible online):

https://www.torontomike.com/2016/06/in_defense_of_homerism_in_pro_spor/

https://www.bnaibrith.ca/b_nai_brith_canada_names_marty_york_senior_coordinator_of_media_and_sports/

https://torontosun.com/2016/11/11/lest-we-forget-doesnt-seem-to-apply-to-interpreters

One more thing -- when submitting my latest edits, a notification indicated that one of the sources was problematic, but I could not tell which one it was referring to. Please advise if anything needs to be removed or modified in order to fix this.

Please let me know if there is anything further I can do to help make this article acceptable for publication.
