More needs to be made of the boycott. I don't know enough about the competition, but the article should either argue that she was good enough to win anyway or that she wouldn't have had a chance if the ComBloc nations participated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.63.86.153 (talk) 18:53, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Erm, without sourcing, that would speculation at best. Wildhartlivie (talk) 01:29, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
- Wildhartlivie-did you post that just to see your name on another page? There are plenty of other international competitions before and after the Olympics where combloc athletes should have competed against Mary Lou. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.63.82.163 (talk) 23:43, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
- Aaaaand....so? What does that prove? That they would've won? That they should've won? You need citations by established experts, not just "most fans agree" which is clearly opinion. 69.86.96.214 (talk) 06:12, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
You cannot add "She was the first female gymnast from outside Eastern Europe to win the Olympic all-around title" without "after 14 Eastern Bloc countries boycotted the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles" otherwise you are distorting history and the truth. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Glinebet (talk • contribs) 03:35, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
Revco claim
editI'm not sure how to source this, but the Revco connection is correct. Here's a stub of an article: http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-117122_ITM —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.174.69.144 (talk) 03:52, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
Wheaties
editThere are three citations for Mary Lou being the first female on a Wheaties box, but Jane Fauntz was on it in 1935. I'm not sure what to do. -Etoile (talk) 15:04, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Terminology
editThe term 'sophomore year' means nothing to anyone outside the US. Is there any good reason not to say 'second year' (or whatever it is)? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.3.179.151 (talk) 03:38, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
- Linked it, at least. "Second year" doesn't have the "of four" implication that sophomore does, though another wording would be welcome. Courcelles 03:52, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
- That's a new one on me - but it's still the second year, right? Deb (talk) 10:20, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
Medical Conditions
editWhile the hip dysplasia may be interesting and relevant to her career and her achievements, I am not sure what actual information the reporting of incontinence and hemorrhoids in a middle aged women conveys. Fodder for a humorous pre-adolescent book report? There are numerous athletes who have far more serious conditions as a result of their careers, and these are seldom included in their bios.Georgekwatson (talk) 17:17, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

Transfer from Sports Reference to Olympedia
editHello, Wikipedians, I've just updated for Mary Lou Retton to have her reference transferred from Sports Reference to Olympedia. And I put in the medal records. 100.2.114.167 (talk) 22:57, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
Personal website
editPersonal website certificate failed, site loaded with malware popups. I think the site should be re-added if the certificate is renewed. Removed site was: *[ http ://www.marylouretton.com/ Official website ] (spaces added to remove click potential). CMacMillan (talk) 16:23, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for bearing with me while I learned how to properly enter a citation.
editAs promised, I just finished, after about a week or more, editing the Compensated endorsements section. I originally just placed the text with a link to the source and then tonight changed that to a proper citation - my first.
That's why you'll prolly notice several edits of the same section by me.
It should look good and be compliant w/Wiki standards now :)
Again, thank you for bearing with me while I took the time to get this right and do it properly. Tallship (talk) 08:31, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
