North/South implications?
editI have to disagree with this statement recently added to the article:
"Despite the universities' proximity, a factor in the rivalry's intensity has been Virginia's traditional identity as a Southern state and Maryland's traditional identity as a Northeastern state with the opposing fanbases reflecting historical rivalries between the two regions."
In my opinion, the rivalry between UVA and UMD is not strictly related to any North/South division. As for the states themselves, I don't think it's a stretch to say that southern and western Maryland and the Eastern Shore have a much stronger emotional connection to the "South" than does northern Virginia. I don't want to wander off on a Civil War tangent, but while Maryland didn't secede, much of the populace had strong sympathies for the Confederacy. It isn't particularly pertinent why they didn't secede, but the fact of where their sympathies laid is. Maryland is certainly not considered, I think, a "Northeastern" state by most of its residents.
UVA and UMD have been differentiated in the past more by their student bases than arcane North/South cultural feelings. Maryland used to be a primarily blue-collar school; in the past the Midshipmen called them "rednecks" and "coal miners". It was an agricultural college into the early 20th century, and a land-grant school with a military training requirement. It has traditionally been focused on hard sciences: engineering, agriculture, military science. All of these things contrast with Virginia. Today, many Virginia students hold negative opinions about the Maryland student body with its large amount of Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York natives and the associated stereotypes of those groups. Maryland students think, well, frankly, that UVA students are elitists and nerds.
That being said, if any reliable sources can be found that disagree with that assessment, then certainly, it bears a mention. As for now, I'm going to remove it. Strikehold (talk) 04:55, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Logo for UVA
editHello. I was wondering if someone could add a logo to represent UVA in the infobox so that people can get a visual reference of the teams. Thanks. Jay (talk) 04:16, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
- Done. Also updated Maryland wordmark to its current form. Mdak06 (talk) 04:08, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
- Apparently using logos is now verboten for rivalry pages. If someone has a non-logo image of the word "Virginia" in UVA colors, perhaps that could be used instead. Mdak06 (talk) 13:30, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
