East West North South
editOk so I was on Route 4 today from the Beltway to the District line, and it is definitely signed as North/South along the route, but from crossstreets, it's signed as East/West! I have photos (not great ones) that show it if you want the proof, although I'd imagine someone who works on this page lives near it and could check it out for themselves if they wanted. Anyway, so the "East/West marking in PG" note isn't really entirely correct, is it? --MPD T / C 05:58, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
- The location classifications in Maryland are configured such that only one pairing of cardinal directions can be used: north-south or east-west. So if a road changes between the two, confusion results. You are correct: State signs will typically refer to this as north-south as that is how it is officially classified; but County signs need not respect this classification, as the County is not bound to the State's classification system nor may all of their staff necessarily be aware of the north-south classification in the first place. Don't worry, it's confusing to the State, too... check out MD 191 over in MoCo sometime: you can be officially driving north on the roadway, but you'll actually be driving south! The note in the main article for MD 4 is not entirely accurate... I try not to edit main articles in the morning (or else I just make things worse), so I'll see if I can tend to it tonight; but you are more than welcome to beat me to it!
