Credits
editThe list of songwriters for this song appears to come from Dee Dee King's 1989 album Standing in the Spotlight, which includes a cover version of Mashed Potato Time (image). But that list is a hopeles mess. The writers who were credited on the original 1962 release of "Mashed Potato Time" were Jon Sheldon (a pseudonym of Kal Mann) and Harry Land, who is not credited on the 1989 cover version at all. When the song was rereleased on the It's Mashed Potato Time album, the credits had changed to "Brianbert" (i.e. Brian Holland and Robert Bateman) and Sheldon. Probably this was because "Mashed Potato Time" was considered a plagiarism of "Please Mr. Postman", which was written by Holland and Sheldon. The 1989 list also includes Dobbins, Garrett and Horton, who are the other three credited writers of "Please Mr. Postman." Finally, King and Rey were only involved with the 1989 cover version, not the original song, which was released when King (i.e. Dee Dee Ramone) was ten or eleven years old.
