quote in opening
editThe quote attributed to Weems in the opening paragraph of the article is bogus. Weems never wrote, "I cannot tell a lie..."Hilltoppers (talk) 14:02, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
original family name
editThe phonetic spelling of the name Weems and his unreferenced Scottish ancestry suggest that the original family name might have been Wemyss. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 21:15, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
- That may be the case. My family is descended from Mason's brother James and I have done extensive genealogical research, in both the US and the UK. To the best of our knowledge, the American Weems family *is likely* descended from several siblings who immigrated to Maryland in the early 18th century, who belonged to the greater Wemyss family in Scotland. Sadly, there is no directly verifiable evidence to support this, other than inference and consistent family lore. Evansknight (talk) 14:11, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Recent edits adding a source.reference
editIn September and recently in October - here etc - a source/reference was added. I think we should have a discussion here about whether or not to include the Bish/Gardiner article & the self-published Bish book as a reference. I do have concerns about the website (liberty1(dot)org) & its publisher (Institute for American Liberty) that published the Bish/Gardiner article - both are complete unknowns. Also, Bish's book I Can't Tell A Lie: Parson Weems and the Truth about George Washington's Cherry Tree, Prayer at Valley Forge, and Other Anecdotes is self-published. Nothing against Bish or his possible bona-fides but was there an editor, is there any kind of internal review?...self-published so for me it's all an unknown if the book is a reliable source or not. - I agree. I would like to know more about the authors and the scholarly process of their article, if it was peer-reviewed or published in a recognized journal. Evansknight (talk) 14:13, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
